Job Summary
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine seeks a Clinical Nurse Coordinator to serve as a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology team at Primary Children’s Hospital. The team comprises 10 registered nurses, 4 nurse practitioners, and 21 physicians. The Coordinator delivers professional nursing care in-person, via phone, or through patient portal, using strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status, implement clinical nursing interventions, develop and evaluate patient care plans, and provide education to enhance outcomes and promote a safe, therapeutic environment.
The position requires on-site presence most days, with occasional telecommuting when operationally appropriate, primarily at Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Salt Lake City campus and occasionally at Miller or Layton campuses.

ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions:
~0.30 FTE – General GI- Performs phone management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
- Discusses patient and family concerns in person/over the phone and/or via the electronic health record.
- Provides and develops patient/family education materials on common Gastroenterology disorders and communicates best practices to answer questions proactively.
- Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.
- Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in the patient’s record.
- Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals, communicating adjustments or changes to patient/family.
- Develops and participates in educating patients and families about care programs.
- Communicates lab and other test results to families.
- Provides medication refills.
- Assists providers and staff with patient‑related paperwork such as letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and pre‑authorization.
- Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
- Works closely with triage team and gastroenterology staff to provide high‑quality, efficient care.
- Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
- Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
- Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
- Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes and improve care.
- Provides nursing support to the pancreatitis clinic, managing care coordination, triage, patient education, and follow‑up for a complex pediatric pancreatitis population.
- Coordinates closely with pancreatitis‑specialized physicians, the Advanced Endoscopy Clinical Nurse Coordinator, registered dietitians, behavioral health providers, and other interdisciplinary team members to support comprehensive patient care.
- Prepares patients for clinic visits by completing thorough chart review and pre‑visit planning, summarizing interval history, and supporting efficient clinic flow.
- Collects and enters patient data relevant to pancreatitis care and outcomes, including use of REDCap, to support quality improvement initiatives and future research.
