PS Nurse Practitioner - Huntsman Cancer Hospital Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) chosen for this position will provide care to our hospitalized patients primarily on our inpatient oncology service, with options for cross‑coverage responsibilities on our inpatient units and possible option to work primary care with treatment to a group of patients in a clinic or hospital unit. This dynamic and challenging position requires excellent communication and collaboration skills.
The NP will work with a high level of autonomy as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team to provide care to patients with complex oncological malignancies who often also possess a wide range of comorbidities and internal medicine complications. Schedule is variable but will include days, weekends, and swing shifts.
The Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is part of the University of Utah Health Care system, serving cancer patients throughout the Intermountain West. The position of the Internal Medicine NP at the Huntsman Cancer Institute is critical to ensuring that the mission and values of University of Utah Health Care is exemplified in every interaction with our patients in the Oncology Program and general Internal Medicine patients. - Assesses the physical condition of a group of patients by performing physical examinations and obtaining medical histories.
- Formulates the medical plan and prognosis based on patient’s condition.
- Consults with physician(s) regarding patient health care plans and treatment.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient’s clinical problems and health care needs.
- Performs selected invasive procedures for therapeutic and/or diagnostic reasons within scope of validated competence.
- Initiates and/or recommends medical drug therapies or other forms of related therapeutic treatment and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policy.
- Complies with medical records policies regarding the complete and accurate documentation of patient care. Initiates and maintains required records and legal documents.
- Participates in quality improvement activities.
- Counsels patients, families and significant others about health and illness, and promotes health maintenance.
- Evaluates, plans, implements, and re‑evaluates the care of individuals requiring emergency measures.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
- Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area.
- Demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills.
- Ability to provide care appropriate to the population served.
- Licensure to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Utah.
- Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
- Utah State prescriptive privileges.
- Licensure is obtained by completing a Master's degree in Nursing or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master's degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
- UHPPM 1-56 requires that newly hired non-physician providers apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
