Responsibilities Job SubfamilyEmergency nurses deliver urgent care to patients experiencing acute illnesses or trauma in the Emergency Department. Practicing in a fast-paced environment, they require a high level of clinical skill, critical thinking, and emotional resilience. They initiate life‑saving interventions and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. ED nurses are skilled in triage, resuscitation, emergency procedures and the use of advanced monitoring.

Performs routine patient care assignments and may require intermediate support. Applies theoretical knowledge to clinical practice in structured, low‑risk environments. Demonstrates understanding of basic nursing principles and unit protocols. Begins applying foundational knowledge in real‑time care. Uses standard procedures and tools to assess and respond to patient conditions. Escalates concerns to senior staff and the medical team. Works under varied levels of supervision depending on skill set.
Follows care plans and protocols with limited decision‑making. Communicates respectfully with patients and team members. Seeks clarification and feedback to support learning.
- Provides foundational nursing care to Emergency Department patients, including monitoring vital signs and patient status.
- Manages and operates medical equipment safely and effectively.
- Documents patient care and procedures accurately using Epic.
- Administers intravenous and oral medications as prescribed.
- Assists with procedures such as moderate sedation, hemodynamic monitoring, rhythm interpretation, and other complex tasks under supervision.
- Participates in life‑saving measures including defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with guidance from experienced staff.
- Supports triage assessments, nursing evaluations, and discharge planning under supervision.
- Contributes to nursing care plans appropriate to skill level.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to care for pediatric patients under supervision, including IV placement, lab collection, airway intervention, and weight‑based medication administration.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to care for obstetric patients under supervision, including assisting with delivery, postpartum care, and newborn resuscitation.
- Seeks guidance for responsibilities beyond current knowledge level and collaborates with leadership to advance practice beyond task‑oriented care.
- Participates in orientation and ongoing development to build competency in emergency nursing.
- Performs other duties as assigned consistent with departmental needs and organizational objectives. Job duties may vary based on patient care requirements, staffing patterns, or operational priorities, provided such duties are within the employee’s scope of licensure, training, and competency.
- Works rotating schedules (variable hours, weekends, nights, holidays) to meet 24/7 care needs; maintains regular, reliable, punctual attendance.
