Responsibilities

Job Subfamily

Ambulatory, Primary & Specialty Care nurses handle a variety of patient needs, from routine health checkups and vaccinations to managing chronic illnesses in an outpatient setting. These nurses assess patient needs, deliver nursing care including administering medication and performing procedures. They provide patient and family education, coordination of care and work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for their patients.

Career Level

N1:
Performs routine patient care assignments and may require intermediate support. Applies theoretical knowledge to clinical practice in structured, low-risk environments. Demonstrates understanding of basic nursing principles and unit protocols. Begins applying foundational knowledge in real-time care. Uses standard procedures and tools to assess and respond to patient conditions. Escalates concerns to senior staff and the medical team. Works under varied levels of supervision depending on skillset.

Follows care plans and protocols with limited decision-making. Communicates respectfully with patients and team members. Seeks clarification and feedback to support learning.

Essential Functions

* Applies foundational nursing knowledge, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and basic disease processes, to perform routine patient assessment and care in the ambulatory environment.

* Begins applying problem-solving, critical thinking, and growing clinical judgment to patient monitoring and interventions for low to moderate acuity patients using standard protocols.

* Provides patient care within structured ambulatory guidelines, demonstrating competency in core unit skills and workflows while following established safety, documentation, and clinical protocols.

* Functions under varying levels of supervision appropriate to experience and skill development.

* Triages patients appropriately, recognizes abnormal findings, and seeks guidance or escalates concerns in accordance with emergency, rapid response, and unit protocols while working under supervision.

* Completes all required orientation, residency, and training activities and responds to feedback to support learning, performance improvement, and achievement of departmental goals.

* Communicates clearly and respectfully with patients, families, and team members, participating in huddles, team initiatives, and collaborative activities to support patient care.

* Demonstrates reliability, accountability, and professionalism, including timely review and response to communications, with a consistent focus on safety.

* Performs and assists in procedures as appropriate.

* Provides patient and family education checking understanding using basic teach-back techniques.

* At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.
