Pediatric Gastroenterology Triage Nurse Job Summary

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to function as a member of the Pediatric Gastroenterology team at the Primary Children’s Hospital Lehi campus. The team consists of 10 RNs working with 4 NPs and 20 MDs. The nurse will deliver professional nursing care to patients via in‑person encounters, phone, or patient portal, utilizing strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status, implement clinical nursing interventions, develop and evaluate patient care plans, and provide patient education materials to enhance outcomes.

The nurse ensures a safe and therapeutic environment.

The position is located at the Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital Miller Campus, 2250 North Miller Campus Drive, Lehi, UT 84043, with occasional travel to the Primary Children’s Hospital Eccles Outpatient Building in Salt Lake City, UT.

Responsibilities
  • Performs phone management with patients’ parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
  • Discusses patient and family concerns in person, over the phone, or via the electronic health record.
  • Provides and develops patient/family education materials surrounding common gastroenterology disorders; communicates educational best practices to proactively answer common questions and reduce future messages.
  • Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.
  • Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in the patient’s record.
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health‑care goals; communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.
  • Develops and participates in educating patients and their families about care programs.
  • Communicates lab and other test results to families.
  • Provides medication refills.
  • Assists providers and staff with patient‑related paperwork such as letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and pre‑authorization.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
  • Works closely with triage team and gastroenterology staff to provide high‑quality, efficient care to patients and their families.
  • Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
  • Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.
  • Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
  • Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes and improve care.
  • The above responsibilities are shared with other nurses and medical assistants in the department. The incumbent is expected to provide high‑quality patient care within an organization focused on patient safety, patient and parent satisfaction, and positive patient outcomes; advocate for patients and families to ensure their unique needs are met; collaborate with highly skilled team members dedicated to achieving patient goals and delivering world‑class care;

    and actively pursue educational opportunities.

    Minimum Qualifications
