Gastroenterology Triage Nurse Job Summary

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Universityof Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to function as a member of the Gastroenterology team. The team consists of 9 RNs working with 6 NPs and 20 MDs. Responsible for delivering professional nursing care to patients via phone or patient portal. Utilizes strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status;

implements clinical nursing interventions to modify symptoms; develops, implements, and evaluates patient care plans and patient education materials to enhance and improve outcomes and ensure a safe and therapeutic environment.

Responsibilities Essential Functions
  • Performs phone management with patients' parents, chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.
  • Discusses patient and family concerns over the phone and/or via the electronic health record.
  • Provides and develops patient/family education materials surrounding common Gastroenterology disorders.
  • Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.
  • Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in patient's record.
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals. Communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.
  • Develops and participates in patient and family education about care programs.
  • Communicates lab & other test results to families.
  • Provides medication refills.
  • Assists providers and staff with patient-related paperwork, including letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and pre-authorizations.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.
  • Works closely with triage team and gastroenterology staff to provide high-quality, efficient care to patients and their families.
  • Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.
  • 14. Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precautions, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.
  • Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.
