HQF - Grounds - Temple Square, Gardener - Paid Intern

Job DescriptionThis position is primarily for educational or religious purposes and should be used to provide valuable educational experiences for the Intern. It allows the interns to see how principles and practices learned in their educational institutions are applied in actual work settings. Under general supervision, the Intern performs work as assigned by the department.
Grounds Services with the Headquarters Facilities Department provides an environment that serves as an oasis and refuge from the storms of the world so that all who enter may feel the peace and rest offered by our Savior Jesus Christ. The Headquarters Facilities Gardener role serves as a team member to provide world‑renowned flower bed design and maintenance, turf grass management, and Christmas lighting and displays.
Paid Interns are qualified while enrolled in an educational institution studying plant science, landscape architecture, arboriculture, horticulture, or a related field and for one year following graduation.
Shift DetailsLocation:
Church Headquarters Grounds (HQF), Salt Lake City, UT
Schedule:
40 hours/week – 7:15 am to 4:00 pm
This is a temporary role lasting no longer than 12 months.
Responsibilities- Assist in training and leading volunteers and temporary employees.
- Spray lawns, shrubs, and trees for disease, weed, and insect control, and perform regular fertilization as needed, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Assist in flower bed design and maintenance.
- Perform a wide variety of turf grass management duties such as mowing, trimming, edging, and watering.
- Lightly prune and shape shrubs and trees under the direction of the arborist team to provide optimum growth efficiency and enhance the beauty of grounds.
- Install and remove lighting and displays for acclaimed Christmas on Temple Square events.
- Perform snow removal duties as assigned.
- Assist with other grounds maintenance and projects as assigned.
The Intern is expected to meet rigid and challenging deadlines, work in harmony with others, take direction on each assignment, and give full attention to detail. Independence in working, tact, and diplomacy are required.
Qualifications- General plant identification knowledge.
- Willingness to develop flower bed design capabilities within the Temple Square Grounds Services Training Program.
- Ability to work in a professional manner with others as well as alone without constant supervision; positive attitude and teamwork.
- Must pass all required safety and equipment certifications and trainings.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, push, and pull for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to fit into confined spaces and maneuver flower beds without causing damage.
- Must be able to independently lift and position objects weighing as much as 50 pounds; ability to team lift up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Requires physical dexterity in limbs and digits to operate hand and power tools and equipment.
- Vision of at least 20/40 with or without corrective lenses and not less than 120 degrees combined horizontal peripheral vision.
- English language proficiency for general communication, video training, building security, and safety; understanding of verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and adjust to seasonal needs.
- Must be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently temple‑worthy.
