Position SummaryThe Senior Manager will shape and advance BD’s materials science strategy within the MSSI organization, supporting the medical device sector across BD’s diverse portfolio.
Key Responsibilities- Lead, mentor, and develop high‑performing multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and technical staff.
- Oversee material selection, development, and qualification for BD medical devices, ensuring compliance with industry standards, internal policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders (R&D, manufacturing, quality, regulatory) and external partners, influencing cross‑functional priorities in a matrixed global environment.
- Direct and prioritize multiple projects and initiatives, allocate resources, and ensure timely delivery of milestones to support BD’s strategic goals.
- Provide technical guidance in laboratory experiments, analytical testing, and mechanical characterization using advanced techniques.
- Contribute to long‑term vision and strategic planning for material innovation and organizational capability building within MSSI.
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering with a material focus, or a related chemistry science major.
- Minimum 12 years post‑graduate experience in a chemical or material‑related field, preferably in the medical device industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in leading material science initiatives and at least 3 years of functional management experience leading 6–8 head‑count teams.
- Experience working and influencing in a strong matrix organization structure.
- Hands‑on experience with analytical and mechanical testing techniques such as HPLC, DMA, TGA, FTIR, DSC, Instron, AFM, EDX, SEM, XPS, Goniometer, Tensiometer, GPC, ICP‑MS, Atomic Absorption, Cyclic Voltammetry, Liquid‑Liquid Extraction, NMR, Dynamic and Static Light Scattering, Rheology, and Hansen Solubility Parameters.
- Direct experience in the medical device sector.
- Track record of success in a strongly matrixed organization.
- Advanced laboratory management and technical troubleshooting skills.
- Track record of publications and patents or peer‑review literature in the industry.
- Graduate with a Ph.D. from a top‑20 university (US News or global ranking).
- Strong work ethic and commitment to reliability and accountability.
- Intelligence and problem‑solving ability; analytical thinking and creativity to solve complex challenges.
- Perseverance and resilience in achieving goals.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Results orientation; consistently delivers on project objectives and organizational targets.
