Job Summary
The Marriott Library is seeking a student to work closely with Open Scholarship and Data Services as an assistant for Research Data Management. The position will provide hands‑on experience working with research data from a variety of disciplines and learning about data management, curation, and documentation with an emphasis on open science. It is an especially helpful opportunity for students interested in research and/or information science, or those pursuing a career in data analytics, data engineering, or data governance.
The hired student will primarily serve as an assistant with the library’s research data repository, The Hive ((Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).). Working with the library’s two research data librarians, the student will review and curate new data deposits, normalize metadata, map legacy metadata onto the new interface, and update metadata records and README files for internal consistency. The student will also assist with reporting related to The Hive and other research data management services.
Experience working with APIs is a plus.
The work must be done on‑site at the Marriott Library. The schedule will accommodate the student’s course schedule and will be set to meet between Monday and Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Responsibilities- Review and curate incoming research data deposits for the University of Utah’s research data repository, The Hive.
- Normalize metadata and map legacy metadata onto the repository’s new interface.
- Check and update metadata and README files to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Assist with reporting, analytics, and data visualizations related to The Hive and other research data management services.
- Perform additional tasks as required based on the student’s qualifications and interests, including API work or support for other research data services initiatives.
- Current University of Utah student enrolled in at least 6 undergraduate credit hours or 5 graduate credit hours during the fall and spring semesters.
- Experience working with data, data analytics, and reporting.
- Interest in Open Science and data sharing.
- Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
- Willingness to learn new procedures and workflows.
- Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Good English comprehension and written language skills.
- Participation in the university’s retirement system (URS) for eligible new hires.
- Potential for background check and drug screening as required.
