Job Title: Security Officer II

Job Summary

Provides security services for the University of Utah’s Main Campus community, including locking and unlocking buildings, patrolling campus, writing reports, assisting motorists, documenting patrol activities, and covering stationary posts. Responsibilities may include operating vehicles and use of programs such as Avigilon, CCURE, Teams, and Microsoft Office. The Department of Public Safety provides security for a variety of campus partners and may assign this position to fill specific staffing needs.

Availability to work any and all security posts as requested is required. Safety is a top priority for the University of Utah.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a security presence on Main Campus locations.
  • Patrol campus premises to deter criminal activity and enhance the safety of students, staff, and faculty.
  • Monitor facilities in assigned areas of patrol with a walk through and physical presence.
  • Write reports of irregularities or incidents which may include equipment or property damage, propped or unlocked doors, and other campus safety concerns.
  • Request police or other emergency services in situations such as fire, disturbances, or medical emergencies.
  • Escort or drive motor vehicle to patrol assigned area and/or transport individuals.
  • Provide vehicle boosts and other motorist assistance services.
  • Unlock university buildings as required and secure university property by locking buildings.
  • Maintain professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  • Adhere to University of Utah Department of Public Safety and general University policies.
  • Work in inclement weather or extreme weather conditions.
  • May be confined to a service vehicle for an entire shift.
  • Be willing to maintain required training; all training will be provided by the department.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma, GED, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and one year security experience or equivalency.
    • Successful background check.
    • Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service.
    • Valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
    • Obtain Crisis Prevention Institute certification after being hired.
    • Attend other mandatory trainings as required by the Department of Public Safety.
    • Demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
    Preferences
    • Two years of professional security experience.
    • CPR / AED / First Aid certification.
    • Experience with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, CCure, Avigilon, and RMS.
    • Familiarity with radio communications.

    Eligible new hires with prior Utah Retirement System (URS) service may elect to enroll in URS if they make the election before becoming eligible for retirement.
