Security/Safety Associate - Substitute

This is a substitute position. Available shifts are based on staffing needs.

About the Position

The Safety Associate assists in providing high‑quality customer service experiences by ensuring visitors enjoy the library in a safe manner and in accordance with patron behavior policies. The Safety Associate helps maintain a safe and secure environment for patrons and staff, working collaboratively to identify and resolve safety and patron behavior concerns.

This role serves as backup rather than a regular schedule. Shifts are offered only when coverage is needed, making it ideal for candidates seeking flexible, as‑needed work rather than consistent weekly hours.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Fostering a safe environment – ensure an excellent library experience, monitor premises, observe behaviors, and resolve concerns using the Library’s Patron Behavior and Rules of Conduct policy with a trauma‑informed lens. Utilize verbal de‑escalation skills. Report building safety concerns.
  • Cultivating relationships – foster good working relationships with diverse people, including patrons, staff, volunteers, vendors, law enforcement, and community partners. Proactively engage to diffuse situations and accept assignments promptly.
  • High‑quality customer service – engage with customers, exhibit exceptional service, and use de‑escalation skills. Seek innovative ways to provide safety services and serve a diverse population.
  • Situational response – respond to emergencies such as fire alarms, evacuations, or other facility events.
  • Administrative reporting – complete daily administrative documentation professionally. Familiarity with GRAMA and facilitate law‑enforcement requests per library policy.
  • Safe vehicle operation – drive safely to library locations, obey traffic rules, maintain required insurance.
  • Other duties – perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High‑school graduation (or equivalent) and at least three years of experience in social services or customer service to a diverse population, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Valid Utah driver’s license and a clean driving record. Must provide personal transportation and maintain state‑required vehicle insurance.
  • General knowledge of building security, security procedures, and de‑escalation techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine record‑keeping, exercise initiative and judgment, manage work priorities, communicate effectively in English, and maintain effective relationships with staff, agencies, vendors, contractors, and the public.
  • Availability to work days or evenings, weekends, or before/after library hours.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform tasks that may require being on the ground.
  • Professionalism in appearance, work ethic, and positive attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Spanish or other non‑English language skills.
  • EMT certification.
Working Environment
  • Busy urban public library setting.
  • Repetitive movement: standing, walking, bending.
  • Good hand mobility and coordination required.
  • Inclement weather exposure when working outside or traveling.
Schedule
  • Substitute position with no set schedule.
  • Hours not guaranteed; shifts offered based on staffing needs.
Other Information
  • Completion of a criminal background check required for candidates over eighteen years of age.
  • The City Library participates in the federal Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify). Employment contingent upon verification.

Compensation
  • Starting Range Grade 14, $23.15 per hour.
  • Mileage reimbursement available when a personal vehicle is used for library business.
