BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

The Mobile Fleet Mechanic performs major and minor tune‑ups, maintenance (including welding), and safety inspections on gasoline, diesel, and other mechanical equipment. The role covers manual transmissions, differentials, suspensions, chassis systems, cooling, and fuel, electrical and hydraulic systems. The mechanic works on both heavy and light fleet vehicles, regularly responding to off‑shop locations for mobile repairs. After‑hours and weekend call‑outs are required weekly or monthly.

Works under the general direction of the Fleet Manager and receives daily work assignments from the Lead Mechanic.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES Generalized Mechanic Work Activities
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing light fleet, heavy fleet, utility fleet, moving parts, and equipment which operate primarily on mechanical principles.
  • Running, maneuvering, and navigating vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, and fire apparatus.
  • Inspecting apparatus, equipment, or materials to identify causes of errors or defects.
Mechanic Specific Tasks
  • Adhering to safety requirements, procedures, and best practices.
  • Adjusting and maintaining apparatus and vehicles using control and regulating devices.
  • Adjusting, maintaining, and repairing or replacing engines and subassemblies, including transmissions, with hand tools, jacks, hoists, and cranes.
  • Cleaning parts by spraying with grease solvent or immersing in solvent tanks.
  • Lubricating and performing routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles.
  • Diagnosing and repairing or replacing water tanks, fire pumps, systems, and piping.
  • Diagnosing faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment and calibration devices.
  • Dismantling and reassembling heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Examining parts for damage or excessive wear using micrometers and gauges.
  • Fabricating needed parts or items from steel and/or sheet metal.
  • Fitting bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Operating and inspecting apparatus or vehicles to diagnose defects.
  • Testing apparatus or vehicles to ensure operating efficiency.
  • Reading and understanding operating manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts.
  • Repairing emergency lighting or audible notification systems.
  • Scheduling maintenance for industrial machines and equipment and keeping equipment service records.
  • Testing apparatus or vehicles after repair to ensure compliance with manufacturers’ specifications.
  • Welding or soldering broken wiring, parts, and structural members using electric or gas welders and soldering tools.
  • Maintaining records and forms on work performed through fleet management software (Fleetio).
  • Ensuring all UFA parts inventory used in vehicle repair is documented in fleet management program.
  • Accurately documenting all time engaged on vehicle repairs.
  • Completing fleet management program work orders promptly or when requested by supervisor.
  • Assisting Lead Mechanic with completion of MR’s for vendor purchases and repairs when needed.
  • Working with the Fleet Data Administrator to ensure record accuracy.
  • Ordering and picking up equipment and vehicle parts as required.
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level.

  • Inspect and determine repairs needed for heavy/light apparatus and equipment; perform repairs as necessary.
