Role DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced Senior Boiler & Combustion Controls Technician to join our field service team in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. This is a full-time, field-based position supporting industrial and commercial customers throughout Utah and, occasionally, the surrounding Mountain West region.
The ideal candidate can independently diagnose, repair, commission, and optimize boilers, burners, flame-safeguard systems, combustion controls, and associated electrical and mechanical equipment. This is a senior-level position for someone who understands the complete boiler system and can methodically troubleshoot combustion, fuel-train, electrical, instrumentation, and control-related problems.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Troubleshoot, service, and repair industrial and commercial boilers, burners, combustion-control systems, and related equipment.
- Perform burner startups, commissioning, combustion testing, and fuel-to-air ratio adjustments using calibrated combustion-analysis equipment.
- Diagnose flame-failure, ignition, fuel-train, actuator, VFD, motor, sensor, transmitter, and electrical-control issues.
- Test flame-safeguard systems, operating controls, limits, interlocks, and safety devices.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and operational testing on steam and hot-water boiler systems.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, control schematics, P&IDs, sequence-of-operation documents, and manufacturer manuals.
- Configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot control panels, actuators, transmitters, and other field instrumentation.
- Support boiler-control upgrades, burner retrofits, lead–lag systems, and equipment replacement projects.
- Clearly document work performed, test results, deficiencies, and recommended corrective actions.
- Communicate professionally with customers, facility personnel, project managers, and other technicians.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less-experienced technicians when needed.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule and provide occasional after-hours emergency service.
- Significant hands-on experience servicing industrial or commercial boilers, burners, and combustion-control systems.
- Strong understanding of burner sequencing, ignition systems, flame detection, combustion setup, fuel trains, operating controls, limits, and safety interlocks.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, combustion, and control-related problems.
- Working knowledge of motors, VFDs, relays, actuators, transmitters, control panels, and industrial electrical circuits.
- Ability to safely use electrical test equipment and combustion-analysis instruments.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, P&IDs, technical drawings, and equipment manuals.
- Experience with PLC-based controls, parallel-positioning systems, O₂ trim, lead–lag controls, and building automation integration is highly desirable.
- Experience with Siemens, Fireye, Honeywell, Autoflame, Preferred Instruments, Power Flame, or similar boiler and burner controls is beneficial.
- Familiarity with high-pressure steam systems and applicable ASME, National Board, NFPA, and jurisdictional requirements is preferred.
- Technical certification or associate degree in an electrical, mechanical, controls, or industrial field is beneficial; equivalent hands-on field experience will be considered.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to safely work in industrial environments, mechanical rooms, elevated areas, and confined or restricted-access locations as required.
- Willingness to travel locally and occasionally overnight.
- Strong communication, documentation, customer-service, and time-management skills.
