The Sr. Manager, Software Engineering & Application Development leads the development, modernization, and ongoing support of custom enterprise applications within a large, established organization undergoing a significant technology transformation.

This leader will oversee the application development lifecycle and establish the tools, standards, and engineering practices used to move code effectively from development through testing and into production. The role requires a strong technical foundation, particularly within the Microsoft/.NET ecosystem, combined with proven people leadership and the ability to guide engineering teams toward modern cloud development, Dev Ops, and CI/CD practices.

In the near term, this leader will focus on improving and modernizing existing applications, working through a backlog of UI enhancements, application improvements, incidents, and defect resolution. As the organization's technology transformation progresses, the role will increasingly focus on building custom software and expanding internal software engineering capabilities.

The ideal candidate combines hands-on technical credibility with strategic leadership, strong team engagement, cross-functional collaboration, and a passion for modern software engineering.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the strategy, development, modernization, and ongoing maintenance of custom enterprise applications
  • Manage and develop a software engineering team, including coaching, performance management, technical mentorship, career development, and future team growth
  • Provide technical leadership across the application development lifecycle, from requirements and architecture through development, testing, deployment, and production support
  • Establish and enforce software engineering standards, development methodologies, source/version control practices, CI/CD processes, and Dev Ops best practices
  • Guide development of applications and services using  technologies, cloud platforms, APIs, databases, containerization, and related enterprise technologies
  • Lead the transition toward greater internal custom software development as the organization's technology capabilities mature
  • Prioritize and manage application development work, including new development, application enhancements, UI improvements, incidents, defects, and technical debt
  • Identify, prioritize, and drive assigned work intake requests through successful completion
  • Ensure development initiatives are delivered within established budget, scope, quality, and timeline expectations
  • Partner with business stakeholders and technology teams to understand requirements and translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
  • Communicate project status, technical risks, priorities, and delivery progress to project teams, stakeholders, and senior leadership
  • Oversee Dev Ops processes and relationships to ensure development requests, deployments, and production issues are addressed effectively and in a timely manner
  • Drive adoption of cloud-native development, automation, reusable engineering patterns, and modern application architecture
  • Resolve escalated application development and production issues while identifying opportunities to prevent recurring problems
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and development practices that can improve engineering productivity, application performance, maintainability, and business outcomes
  • Establish a culture of engineering excellence, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and high team engagement
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
  • 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise applications
  • 5+ years of experience leading software engineering or application development teams, including coaching, performance management, and employee development
  • Strong experience within the Microsoft/.NET technology ecosystem, including .NET/.NET Core, ASP.NET, Blazor, C#, F#, and Visual Basic
  • Experience designing and developing applications using cloud services, preferably Microsoft Azure; experience with AWS or Google Cloud Platform is also applicable
  • Strong experience with CI/CD, Dev Ops practices, and source/version control
  • Experience developing and integrating Web APIs
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker
  • Strong database experience, including SQL-based platforms and modern cloud data platforms such as Snowflake
