As a Float Captain, you’ll operate fixed-wing aircraft safely and effectively in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations, manufacturer guidance, and Intermountain policies. You will support multiple bases, conduct time-critical patient transports, and collaborate closely with clinical teams to deliver exceptional air medical care across the region.
What You’ll Do- Exercise independent, critical judgment during preflight planning and all phases of flight.
- Operate to the highest standards of safety, regulatory compliance, and company policy.
- Communicate promptly with crew members, communication specialists, and patients’ families; coordinate decisions with the medical crew.
- Maintain aircraft cleanliness and readiness; replenish oxygen, add engine oil, and ensure proper functioning of systems.
- Assist medical crew members: move bags, direct and participate in patient loading/unloading.
- Evaluate transports against service criteria and use non-transport time for professional development.
- Travel as needed to support assigned bases and return to your home base on rotation.
- Leadership pathways as assigned:
- Lead Pilot: Support satellite-base operations; take corrective action when procedures aren’t followed.
- Instructor/Check Pilot: Conduct evaluations and flight reviews; document results; support training quality improvement.
- Mentor Pilot: Guide Second-in-Command pilots through the Company Pilot Development Program.
- Safety Representative: Monitor hazards, advance best practices, participate in Safety Committee reviews, and deliver safety training.
- All Candidates (minimum):
- 2,500 hours total time in airplanes (or CAMTS equivalency).
- Current Commercial Pilot certificate with appropriate category/class and instrument airplane privileges.
- External – Single-Engine Track:
- Commercial certificate with instrument airplane privileges.
- Eligible to complete an ATP CTP course within one year of hire.
- External – Multi-Engine Track:
- ATP – Multi-Engine Land.
- 1,000 hours multi-engine time.
- 200 hours at night in airplanes.
- 300 instrument hours (including 100 in actual instrument conditions).
- 500 PIC hours in a multi-engine airplane.
- 500 PIC hours in a turbine airplane.
- Internal Candidates:
- Appropriate Commercial certificate with instrument airplane privileges.
- ATP CTP completed before aircraft training.
- 2,500 hours in airplanes and two years of continuous service as an Intermountain Health pilot.
- Listed night, instrument, multi-engine PIC, and turbine PIC requirements also apply.
- Preferred:
- EMS experience.
- 100 hours PIC in King Air 90/200.
- 50 hours PIC in PC-12.
- 200 hours turbojet time (for turbojet operations).
- Predictable 7-on/7-off schedule with float stipend.
- Exposure to multiple aircraft types and operating environments.
- Expanded career development:
Lead, Instructor/Check, Mentor, and Safety Representative pathways. - Bi-weekly float stipend plus travel and meal reimbursement.
