Job Summary:
Angelo State University invites applications for a Planetarium Director position in the Department of Physics and Geosciences beginning Spring or Fall 2027. The appointment will include a teaching load, with primary responsibility for teaching introductory astronomy and physics courses. The position will be longer than the typical 9-months to include summer planetarium duties.
Essential Duties:- Knowledge of current instructional practices, learner-centered teaching methods, assessment strategies, and student engagement techniques.
- Skill in utilizing new and novel instructional technology and alternative delivery methods
- Skill in effective oral and written communication
- Ability to engage the broader community in outreach that is STEM-related in general, and astronomy in particular
- Ability to safely and effectively operate the planetarium projection system
- Ability to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to effectively manage budgets in order to maintain the planetarium, its projection system, and show offerings
- Ability to effectively manage student workers
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
- Ability to contribute to program recruitment, student success initiatives, and departmental service activities
- Master’s degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field at the time of employment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to teach undergraduate astronomy and physics courses in traditional, online, and dual-credit formats
- Willingness to engage with the wider San Angelo community for STEM and astronomy outreach and informal education
- Willingness to participate in departmental service activities and student recruitment efforts
