Job Summary /Description
This job works up to 20 hours a week and is on a 9 month schedule.
The Counselor provides professional counseling, educational support, and related services to individual students and groups, promoting personal, academic, and emotional well‑being. The role also supports the campus community by offering consultation, outreach, and training resources that enhance student success and overall campus health.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
* Provide assessment, individual counseling, group counseling, and crisis intervention for students experiencing mental health or behavioral problems.
* Prepare and maintain confidential clinical documentation records ensuring all legal and ethical requirements are consistently followed.
* Consult with families, faculty, staff, mental health professionals, and medical personnel as needed to facilitate the counseling process and for continuity of care.
* Contribute to campus wellness through education and training by providing outreach programming on mental and emotional health topics.
* Diagnose mental health disorders and write treatment plans.
* Consult with essential offices on campus to promote campus safety when a students' issues rise to the level of being a threat to themselves or others.
* Refer students to outside mental health or medical services as indicated by assessment and/or scope of service issues.
* Demonstrate sensitivity, concern, and acceptance to all students seeking counseling service resources.
* Promote counseling services to the campus community and parents of students.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the director.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
* Knowledge of current professional and ethical standards in counseling.
* Knowledge of mental health issues including anxiety, substance abuse, depression, sexual dysfunction, sexual assault, stress management, suicide, and eating disorders.
* Knowledge of community social service resources and referral pathways.
* Knowledge of student development theory and its practical application in a university setting.
* Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation practices.
Skills
* Skilled in effective oral and written communication.
* Skilled in establishing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships with students, colleagues, and campus partners.
Abilities
* Ability to assess and accurately diagnose mental health and related disorders.
* Ability to recognize when a referral to a higher level of care is needed.
* Ability to manage and complete multiple tasks accurately and in a timely manner.
* Ability to establish, maintain, and appropriately conclude counseling relationships with students.
* Ability to monitor student progress throughout the therapeutic process.
* Ability to work collaboratively and harmoniously with administrative staff, professional staff, and the campus community.
Minimum Qualifications
* A minimum of a Master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or related field is required.
* A minimum of one year of post-licensure professional experience in counseling, social work, or related field is required.
* Successful completion of a practicum in a University Counseling Center may substitute for the require year of post-licensure experience.
* Licensed or the ability to get licensed in the state of Texas within 30 days of application date is required. Acceptable licenses:
Licensed Professional Counselor - Associate, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Master Social Worker, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Preferred Qualifications
