Job Summary

The Housekeeping Supervisor provides frontline leadership and operational oversight for custodial services within Housing and Residential Programs. This position supervises, trains, and coordinates housekeeping staff while ensuring daily operations, projects, and emergency responses meet departmental standards, safety requirements, and service expectations. Serving as the primary operational bridge between custodial staff and Housing Facilities leadership, the Housekeeping Supervisor translates departmental priorities and service goals into effective daily workflows and assignments.

The role balances hands‑on operational engagement with supervisory and administrative responsibilities and may assume expanded responsibilities during staff absences, vacancies, or high‑demand operational periods to ensure continuity of services, compliance, and responsiveness to the residential community.

All positions are considered a part of the larger Office of Housing & Residential Programs team. In the event of a vacancy, staff may be asked to fulfill a role or have other job duties added to their position to meet the needs of staff and the department. Every effort will be made to recruit and fill positions as quickly as possible to allow staff to return to the duties for which they originally were hired.

Job Duties Operational Management
  • Plan and oversee custodial projects, including daily operations, seasonal deep cleaning, and special events.
  • Translate departmental goals and service standards into daily custodial workflows, staff assignments, and project plans.
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs and inspections to assess cleanliness, safety, and service quality, address deficiencies.
  • Monitor quality, efficiency, and safety of custodial operations; implement corrective actions and communicate operational issues or trends as needed.
  • Promote and enforce workplace safety; provide safety instruction and initiate corrective actions when necessary.
  • Dispatch, reassign, and direct staff to emergency or urgent cleaning situations to ensure timely response and service continuity.
  • Provide operational leadership for custodial services during the absence of the Assistant Director to ensure continuity of services and adherence to standards.
  • Perform direct custodial duties as needed during staffing shortages, emergencies, or leave coverage to maintain service levels and model departmental expectations.
Supervision & Training
  • Assign, schedule, and directly supervise housekeeping staff to support daily operations and special projects.
  • Train staff in custodial procedures, safety practices, equipment use, and departmental standards.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance guidance to support staff development and accountability.
  • Reinforce departmental expectations and professional standards through consistent supervision and corrective action when needed.
  • Assume interim supervisory responsibilities during staff absences or vacancies to maintain operational continuity.
Administration & Coordination
  • Maintain staffing plans, daily schedules, and on‑call coverage to meet operational needs.
  • Review and approve time records; maintain accurate documentation related to work orders, inspections, incidents, and attendance.
  • Coordinate ordering, distribution, and inventory of custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluation processes for housekeeping staff.
  • Serve as a primary point of coordination between custodial staff and Housing Facilities leadership for operational matters.
On-Call/Emergency Response
  • Serve as a member of the Housekeeping On‑Call Team throughout the academic year, university breaks, and summer, and be available for call‑to‑duty response to residence hall and campus emergencies.
  • Respond to custodial‑related emergencies, including spills, biohazard cleanups, and urgent sanitation needs, directing staff actions and coordinating immediate response efforts.
