Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic

DescriptionThis mechanic position works the night shift, typically 3:00 PM – midnight, and is responsible for prepping and setting up engines on a dyno, testing engine for quality and performance, troubleshooting if needed, and disconnecting from the dyno to prep for customers. The role can work independently or as part of a team to provide mechanical services that satisfy customer needs and achieve departmental goals.
Mid‑level position – generally has more than four years of experience and/or demonstrated job‑relevant knowledge and skills. A Level III Technician has moderate knowledge of the field’s standard and technical concepts, practices, and procedures. Level III Technician performs a variety of standard, complex, and technical tasks; is indirectly supervised and self‑starting; often a team member on a large project.
The incumbent in this position is expected to model the following practices on a daily basis:

- Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures
- Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and specialized tooling
- Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
- Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management
- Plans and controls the cost of repair jobs
- Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
- Mentors and helps train other technicians
- Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps them in good, clean, and orderly condition
- Completes all documents associated with repairs in a timely manner
- Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
- Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities such as Pro Tech Technician Training Paths
- Requires regular and punctual employee attendance
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
- Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt‑moving equipment preferred
- Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
- Quality control analysis skills – conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
- Operation and control skills – controlling operations of equipment or systems
- Equipment selection skills – determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
- Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
- Ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
- Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
- Ability to read, write, and understand information
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
- Must have or acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)
Education and Experience
- Four or more years of diesel‑powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred
- Ability to read and use schematics and diagrams preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred
