Job Description – Equipment Mechanic III – Fleet Operations Division (2601269)

TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division seeks an Equipment Mechanic III based in San Angelo, TX. The role supports TxDOT’s mission by maintaining and repairing a wide range of wheeled vehicles, including passenger vehicles, medium‑ and heavy‑duty trucks, and construction equipment. Fleet mechanics play a critical role in keeping Texas moving by supporting daily operations and responding to emergency and inclement weather events that affect communities across the state.

Responsibilities
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti‑locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and accurately enter data into the fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways and bridges.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles and equipment; relocate items as needed.
  • Conduct quality assurance and analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by verifying required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems to perform complex diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform additional job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Train less experienced technicians.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Seven (7) years of experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Associate’s degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience, one‑on‑one year.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license (required to drive a state vehicle).
  • Must hold a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or obtain one within 120 calendar days of course registration (two attempts allowed to pass the written and driving exams).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Diesel or Automotive Technology associate’s degree or technical certifications.
  • ASE certifications.
  • Experience using diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Experience working on heavy equipment or construction equipment.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, mechanical devices, and equipment of the trade.
  • Proficiency in diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engine repair procedures.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing electronic and mechanical components and subsystems per defined codes and specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
  • Skill in troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems.
  • Skill in brake repairs, including anti‑locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes, and hydraulic brake systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; temperatures below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour.
  • Exposure to noise.
  • Required to wear protective gear – respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 25 lbs; kneeling or bending legs at the knee to rest on the knee(s).
  • Applicants must perform a job simulation to assess competency in equipment repair.
