The Concho Valley Public Defender Office (CVPDO) Felony Public Defender is located at the office in Tom Green County (San Angelo) or Taylor County (Abilene). The CVPDO represents persons who are not financially able to hire legal counsel across a twelve-county service area covered by two offices: one in San Angelo (Coke, Concho, Irion, Runnels, Schleicher, Sterling, Tom Green), the other in Abilene (Callahan, Coleman, Shackelford, Taylor).
The Social Worker must be willing to live or relocate to reside within the region.
Selected by the Chief Public Defender and reporting to the Chief Public Defender, the social worker is a critical member of CVPDO staff and will provide a range of services to clients, including record collection, coordination of services, compiling personal and health history profiles, and interviewing clients, family members, and other persons. The social worker will also coordinate the operation of our partnership with Angelo State University’s Department of Social Work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Interview clients and, where necessary, perform a thorough bio-psycho-social assessment.
- Identify and interview collateral sources of information. Collateral interviews are done with family members, friends, teachers, social workers, community members, and others connected to the client.
- Request, review, and analyze life history records (i.e., school, medical, psychiatric) in order to document specific arguments within written reports.
- Develop casework plans in conjunction with the attorneys, develop alternative sentencing plans, and, as necessary, provide advocacy in court.
- Assess a client’s readiness for treatment and make referrals to substance abuse treatment, domestic violence, mental health counseling, shelters, etc.
- Oversee the partnership with the Department of Social Work at Angelo State University.
- Maintain an up-to-date and thorough list of statewide resources for CVPDO’s clients.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Skill and ability to manage a demanding and diverse caseload assigned from the Chief Public Defender; ability to work with others to understand and the share the feelings of their clients, helping to build trust and rapport.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment; prolonged periods of sitting and periodic walking, standing, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting up to 15 lbs; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience RequiredMaster’s Degree in social work and experience as a supervisor in the workplace.
Certificates and LicensesMust obtain an LMSW License within six months of employment.
