Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs professional correction work providing direct supervision of juveniles placed in detention and ensures the personal safety of each resident, their co‑worker(s), and themselves while on duty in the Detention Center. Assigned duties vary according to division assignments and/or allocation of workload.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assumes responsibility for the custody and care of youth through knowledge of and adherence to laws, rules, regulations, policies, and standard operating procedures approved by the Tom Green County Juvenile board and governing the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Admits and conducts intake on juveniles being brought into the Juvenile Detention Center ensuring that appropriate documentation from police agency and juvenile has been secured; screens detainee(s) using the appropriate health, behavioral and mental health forms; thoroughly review detainee's rights, level system, facility orientation, PREA orientation and medical needs with child; ensures juveniles understand and follow all established policies and procedures, taking disciplinary action as necessary.

Maintains security in detention, property, and perimeter doors; intervenes during emergencies or altercations to prevent escapes and gain physical control of youth.

Supervises the daily activities of juveniles in detention to include but not limited to classroom, mealtimes, recreation area, dayroom areas, showers, and visitation.

Conducts door and perimeter checks, ensures key control, conducts accurate security count of utensils at mealtimes, monitors residents in their rooms by audio and visual checks in person, conducts room searches and performs pat‑down searches.

Perform necessary housekeeping tasks, which may include sweeping and mopping floors, trash disposal, laundry, and cooking.

Maintains open communication with supervisors, probation officers, parents, and appropriate agencies; observes and keeps staff informed daily of significant behavioral, mental, or hygiene changes in residents.

Administers medication to juveniles as prescribed or as needed if over‑the‑counter medication; performs CPR and/or First Aid on residents in an emergency situation; makes appropriate mental health and medical referrals when the need is identified.

Transports juveniles to scheduled appointments for school, work, medical treatment, counseling, emergency shelters and placement. Completes necessary paperwork and ensures that information provided is accurate.

Conducts release of juveniles to include submitting appropriate paperwork to the detention supervisor upon release and follow department procedures to assure that resident's belongings are released to the individual and note discrepancies.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills

Knowledge of applicable laws, departmental policies, rules, regulations, and detention procedures regarding the custody of juveniles approved by the Tom Green County Juvenile board and governing the Texas Juvenile Justice Department; and first aid and CPR procedures.

Ability to maintain mental capacity in making decisions using good judgement and based off policy; effectively deal with angry, assaultive, and out of control residents and sometimes dangerous situations where exposure to contagious and communicable diseases may occur while on duty; and restrain a juvenile weighing up to 250 pounds.

Skill in written and oral communication and interpersonal relations with departmental employees, other county employees and officials, other law enforcement agencies, juveniles, and the general public; and computer operation using standard word processing software.
