Senior Staff Accountant

The Senior Staff Accountant supports this mission by preparing, analyzing, and reporting financial results to management while ensuring that all accounting deadlines are met.
Responsibilities- Prepare, analyze, and report financial results to management.
- Work with the RS Accounting Manager to meet all accounting deadlines.
- Provide mentorship to staff, including training and performance feedback.
- Train new and seasoned associates and coach them on accounting procedures.
- Review staff accountants’ work and variance explanations to ensure monthly reporting and operational deadlines are met.
- Process journal entries, conduct operating revenue and expense variance analysis, and review staff level work.
- Manage the fixed‑asset system, capitalization policies, depreciation calculations, and analytics.
- Oversee utility accounting, accruals, payments, exceptions, and relationships with vendors and corporate.
- Review inter‑company balances, approve billback wires, and manage debt and third‑party payments and lender reporting.
- Assist with internal and external audits.
- Provide support for asset acquisition and disposition.
- Assess financial risk for prospective retail tenants and review contracts for compliance.
- Create and utilize system reports from GL, AR, and vendor websites.
- Respond to financial inquiries and requests from Avalon Bay business units.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
- At least 3 years of applicable accounting experience.
- Demonstrated ability to train, coach, and mentor staff.
- Experience reviewing and critiquing associates’ assignments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and advanced Excel, with VB Macro experience a plus.
- Excellent time‑management and organizational skills; ability to work under strict deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours; overtime may be required.
