Texas Public Radio (TPR) is seeking a strategic, collaborative and detail-oriented Controller to lead the organization’s accounting and financial operations while ensuring accuracy, compliance and sound financial stewardship.

Based in San Antonio, this leader will oversee accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, audits, internal controls and compliance. You'll partner with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to provide financial insight, guide resource allocation and strengthen processes that support organizational goals.

Whether you're leading financial reporting and audits, managing budgets and forecasts, supporting department leaders, or improving financial processes and controls, your work will help ensure the organization’s financial health and long-term success.

What You'll Do
  • Oversees and manages the organization’s accounting operations, including recording cash receipts, general ledger activity, financial reporting, reconciliations, and monthend/year-end close processes.
  • Prepares, analyzes and presents consolidated financial statements, budget reports, forecasts and financial analyses to executive leadership.
  • Exercises independent judgment in interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervises and reviews the work of accounting support staff, including Accounts Payable functions, to ensure accuracy, compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinates annual financial audits, prepares audit schedules and supporting documentation and serves as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Partners with HR Manager on employee benefit administration as needed and produces billing reconciliations compared to employee deductions.
  • Manages organizational insurance renewals and evaluates coverage needs related to liability, workers’ compensation, directors and officers (D&O), and related policies.
  • Maintains fixed asset records, depreciation schedules and lease accounting schedules in accordance with accounting standards.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and local financial reporting requirements, including preparation and review of IRS Form 1099 reporting.
  • Provides financial guidance and support to department leaders to assist with operational planning, grant budgeting and resource allocation.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive financial, payroll and employee benefit information while demonstrating professionalism and sound business judgment.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve financial processes, internal controls and operational efficiencies across the organization.
  • Performs other finance and administrative leadership duties as assigned in support of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Participates appropriately in TPR fundraising, sponsorship activities and live events.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, with experience in a Controller or similar leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and internal controls.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement when handling sensitive financial and employee information.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to executive leadership and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation
  • Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Experience with grant accounting, budgeting or financial reporting.
