Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio (SMASA) is seeking a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon to join a collaborative, patient first practice recognized for clinical excellence, strong work ethic, and community involvement. Responsibilities Clinical Care- Evaluate patients with acute and chronic sports-related injuries and overuse conditions.
- Perform comprehensive medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
- Order, interpret, and review diagnostic imaging including X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and ultrasound.
- Develop individualized treatment plans, including conservative management and surgical intervention.
- Provide patient education on injury prevention, recovery timelines, and return-to-play expectations.
- Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including follow-up visits and rehabilitation coordination.
- Perform orthopedic sports medicine procedures including but not limited to:
- Arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery
- ACL, meniscus, and ligament reconstruction
- Rotator cuff repair
- Utilize evidence-based surgical techniques and emerging technologies to optimize outcomes.
- Manage surgical complications and postoperative care.
- Collaborate with Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.
- Coordinate care with primary care physicians, referring providers, and specialists.
- Communicate effectively with referring providers regarding patient progress and outcomes.
- Participate in multidisciplinary care planning to support optimal recovery and performance.
- Participate, supervise, and take part in venue coverage and Saturday clinics for sports activities for high school, college, or professional athletics as required.
- Participate, perform, and take part in surgical or clinical call rotations as required.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of patient encounters, surgical procedures, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and all applicable state and federal healthcare regulations.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, and outcomes tracking.
- Adhere to SMASA policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards of care.
- Maintain board certification and required licensure through continuing medical education (CME).
- Stay current with advancements in orthopedic surgery and joint replacement technologies.
- Support education and mentoring of advanced practice providers and clinical staff.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and patient-focused clinical culture.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of an accredited Orthopedic Surgery residency program.
- Completion of a Sports Medicine fellowship preferred.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Orthopedic Surgery.
- Current, unrestricted medical license in the State of Texas.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Prior experience in sports medicine surgery strongly preferred.
- Experience treating athletes and active populations across age groups.
- Experience in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical hospital settings preferred.
- Advanced clinical judgment and surgical decision-making skills.
- Strong technical proficiency in arthroscopic and sports medicine procedures.
- Excellent patient communication and education skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical practice.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Full-time, onsite role with clinic and surgical responsibilities.
- Work performed in medical offices, hospitals, surgical centers, and athletic venues as applicable.
- May require extended hours, event coverage, or on-call responsibilities.
- Must be able to stand for prolonged periods and perform surgical procedures requiring fine motor skills.
