Sports Medicine Associates of San Antonio (SMASA) is seeking a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon to join a collaborative, patient first practice recognized for clinical excellence, strong work ethic, and community involvement. Responsibilities Clinical Care
  • Evaluate patients presenting with joint pain, arthritis, trauma, deformity, and degenerative musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Perform comprehensive medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
  • Order, interpret, and review diagnostic imaging and tests, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and laboratory results.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans, including both conservative management and surgical intervention.
  • Educate patients and families on diagnoses, surgical options, risks, benefits, alternatives, and expected outcomes.
  • Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including follow-up visits and long-term outcomes management.
Surgical Care
  • Perform orthopedic surgical procedures with a primary focus on joint reconstruction, including but not limited to:
  • Total hip arthroplasty
  • Total and partial knee arthroplasty
  • Utilize evidence-based surgical techniques and best practices to optimize patient outcomes and recovery.
  • Oversee intraoperative care and collaborate with anesthesia, nursing, and surgical teams.
  • Manage surgical complications and postoperative issues as they arise.
  • Supervise and collaborate with Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, residents, and fellows (as applicable).
  • Coordinate care with physical therapists, pain management providers, primary care physicians, and specialists.
  • Communicate effectively with referring providers regarding patient progress, outcomes, and care plans.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning to support optimal patient recovery and rehabilitation.
  • Participate, supervise, and take part in venue coverage and Saturday clinics for sports activities for high school, college, or professional athletics as required
  • Participate, perform, and take part in surgical or clinical call rotations as required.
Administrative & Compliance
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of patient encounters, surgical procedures, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and all applicable state and federal healthcare regulations.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, and outcomes tracking.
  • Adhere to SMASA policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards of care.
Professional Development & Leadership
  • Maintain board certification and required licensure through continuing medical education (CME).
  • Stay current with advancements in orthopedic surgery and joint reconstruction technologies.
  • Support clinical education and mentoring of advanced practice providers and staff.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative, and patient-focused clinical culture.
Qualifications Education & Certification
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an accredited Orthopedic Surgery residency program.
  • Completion of a Joint Replacement / Adult Reconstruction fellowship preferred.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Orthopedic Surgery.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license in the State of Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Experience
  • Prior clinical experience in joint replacement surgery strongly preferred.
