Interventional Radiology Coverage in San Antonio, TX

Long-term interventional radiology coverage in San Antonio — block-scheduled, one week per month minimum, with a runway through 2031.

San Antonio is the seventh-largest city in the country and still feels like a place you can live in: no state income tax, housing costs well under the national average, and a downtown built around the River Walk, the Pearl District, and five Spanish colonial missions that make up a UNESCO World Heritage site. The South Texas Medical Center is one of the largest medical campuses in the United States, so this is a genuine academic medical market rather than an outpost.

Winters are mild, the Hill Country and Austin are an hour away, and the Gulf Coast is a short drive.

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) — roughly 10 minutes from the medical campus, with nonstop service to most major U.S. hubs. Austin–Bergstrom (AUS) is a second option about 90 minutes north. This is one of the easiest travel assignments in the country for a physician commuting in for a scheduled week.

A tertiary care, academic-affiliated federal medical center inside the South Texas Medical Center campus, with a full interventional suite and an established IR service staffed by physicians, technologists and nurses. Equipment on site includes ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopy. Case volume runs approximately 1,000 to 1,500 interventional procedures per year, split roughly evenly between inpatient and outpatient, with a genuinely complex mix — embolization, biopsies, drainage, angiography and tube placement — and practice held to American College of Radiology parameters.

7400 Merton Minter Boulevard, San Antonio, TX 78229

Responsibilities
  • Perform the full range of interventional radiology procedures — angiography, arterial and venous embolization, thrombectomy, stent placement, drainage, GI and biliary tube placement, and image-guided biopsy of bone, marrow, kidney, lung and liver
  • Work under ultrasound, CT and fluoroscopic guidance in a dedicated interventional suite
  • Cover the interventional service during weekday clinic and procedure hours alongside a second interventional radiologist
  • Share a rotating call schedule that is published at least two weeks before the start of each month, with phone response inside 15 minutes and on-site response inside 60 minutes when a case requires it
  • Provide pre-procedure evaluation, post-procedure follow-up, and same-day documentation of every case
Qualifications
  • Active, full and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory
  • American Board of Radiology certification, with interventional radiology training (VIR or IR/DR)
  • Current interventional practice with a recent procedure log across vascular and non-vascular intervention
  • Comfortable with high-acuity and complex cases, including female interventional care
  • No history of a restricted, suspended, surrendered, revoked or denied medical license in any state
  • Available for a consistent, recurring commitment — a minimum of one week per month, every month

On site, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Central. There is no routine weekend clinic coverage. Call is shared and published two weeks in advance. This is block-scheduled, recurring work: the minimum commitment is one week per month, consistently, and physicians who want more weeks can have them. The underlying assignment runs long term, with option years extending through July 31, 2031 — predictable, repeatable coverage rather than a one-off locum week.
