Position Summary

The Dean of Students provides care and support for students with respect to social and disciplinary matters. He/she acts as an essential liaison for families, students, faculty, and staff, and reinforces school culture through collaboration, intervention, and example. The Dean of Students reports directly to the Headmaster.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works with Headmaster to provide for the safe and orderly environment of the school by establishing and maintaining standards of student conduct.
  • Builds and protects student culture.
  • Acts as an essential liaison for families, students, faculty, and staff regarding student conduct.
  • Proactively works with students to build relationships and improve behavior issues, as well as academic engagement and student confidence.
  • Coordinates with relevant Great Hearts Lead Office Staff regarding procedural, disciplinary, and social emotional matters as needed.
  • Ensures consistency in faculty approach to student monitoring throughout the day.
  • Assists and develops faculty with effective classroom management tools.
  • Serves as primary interventionist on school-wide behavioral programs (Love and Logic, PBIS, etc.).
  • Oversees discipline issues and monitors/facilitates all disciplinary actions (detention, suspension, etc.).
  • Builds community support for student activities, retreats, and social events, collaborating with PSO and student social/leadership committees as needed.
  • Monitors chronic student tardy/attendance issues and provides intervention and communication with families.
  • Investigates, collects, and documents information/evidence of student allegations involving misconduct and/or bullying.
  • Assists with the supervision of students by maintaining an active presence in hallways, common areas, and restrooms throughout the day.
  • Serves as liaison and advocate alongside general education teachers and the academy Special Education team, counselors, 504 Coordinators, and any other consultants working with the school, regarding student conduct and disciplinary issues.
  • Attends and/or provides administrative support for school social and co-curricular events.
  • Participates in periodic Great Hearts professional development activities with other academy leaders and the faculty of other academies at the discretion of the Headmaster.
  • Teaches or substitutes when necessary.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree at minimum.
  • Experience: At least 2 years of prior teaching experience or equivalent experience in the field required. At least 2 years of experience in a liberal arts institution or knowledge in the delivery of a Great Books core curriculum are strongly preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Type of fingerprint clearance:
    Must pass state specific fingerprint clearance.
  • Physical functions:
    Requires but is not limited to standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. May be required to move or position equipment up to 15 pounds approximately.
