Position Description
The Long-Term Substitute Teacher provides classroom instruction and continuity of learning during a faculty member’s extended absence. This educator upholds the School’s mission, values, and commitment to academic excellence while fostering a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for students. The Long-Term Substitute is expected to deliver high-quality instruction, maintain classroom management, and collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to support the overall educational program.
Key ResponsibilitiesInstructional Delivery
- Implements lesson plans, while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a manner which motivates students to learn and participate
- Deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction that reflects the school’s academic standards and college preparatory focus.
- Incorporate a variety of instructional strategies, including technology, collaborative work, and differentiated learning methods.
Classroom Management
- Maintain a structured, respectful, and inclusive learning environment aligned with the school’s behavioral expectations.
- Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom as required.
- Ensure safety, discipline, and order in all school-related settings.
Assessment and Reporting
- Monitor student progress, provide feedback, and assess work as required.
- Communicate effectively with division heads, parents, and students regarding academic progress and classroom expectations.
- Submit grades, reports, and documentation in a timely manner.
Collaboration and School Engagement
- Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and administrators to support student success.
- Attend required meetings, professional development, and school functions.
- Bachelor’s degree required; degree in Education or subject-related field preferred.
- Prior teaching experience, preferably in an independent school or college preparatory environment.
- Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
- Ability to implement existing lesson plans with fidelity while adapting instruction to student needs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
- Occasional evening or weekend responsibilities (e.g., parent events, school functions).
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
