Teacher – Special Education – LEAP (2025‑2026 SY)
POSITION DESCRIPTIONThe Special Education Teacher will provide IEP‑mandated instruction to students in a highly structured and supported classroom environment. IEP goals will be implemented with data collection serving as the basis for instruction. The teacher must develop and implement instructional and behavioral management strategies for special‑needs students, teach multiple academic areas, and administer and interpret a variety of assessment instruments. Communication with interdisciplinary colleagues and parents is essential to student success.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Follow the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education.
- Manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain an advantageous learning environment.
- Prepare lesson plans that achieve clear objectives, use appropriate techniques, and serve the needs of all learners.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required.
- Conduct parent/teacher conferences and keep parents up‑to‑date of student progress through interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences.
- Assess student learning continually and identify areas of intervention as needed.
- Design instruction to meet the needs of all students through individual and small‑group settings.
- Plan individual and group instruction to foster academic, social, and emotional growth.
- Design clear and specific learning assessments.
- Maintain a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between teacher and learner.
- Maintain a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior.
- Act as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff and monitor student progress.
- Facilitate the independence of the student as a learner.
- Assist other professional staff in diagnosing learning disorders, developing remediation plans, and evaluating student progress.
- Maintain appropriate student data and submit reports as required by state and federal law.
- Demonstrate ability to teach multiple academic areas and possess knowledge of the subjects to be taught.
- Demonstrate knowledge of human growth/development as related to the teaching‑learning process.
- Demonstrate knowledge of special education regulations and guidelines.
- Assist in the selection of textbooks, equipment, and other educational materials.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships.
- Participate in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve instructional practice.
- Public school experience with students displaying social, emotional, or behavioral needs.
- Experience in behavior management, including development and program implementation.
- Collaborative working style.
- Clear and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Effective, active listening skills.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Organizational and problem‑solving skills.
- Current special‑education (165) Connecticut teaching certificate required.
- IEP data‑collection knowledge.
- Working knowledge of IEP Direct.
- Elementary school special education experience preferred.
- Current Physical Management Training (PMT) or Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training.
- Fluency in Spanish is an asset.
