Instructional Assistant – St. Matthew Catholic School
Full‑time position. Immediate start date. The Instructional Assistant fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by assisting the classroom teacher in planning, guiding, and educating students in a loving, Christ‑centered environment.
Responsibilities- Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school.
- Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Supports and adheres to the policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio, including the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
- Adheres to safety training and protocols on a daily basis.
- Protects confidentiality of client and school information, donor gifts, and financial data.
- Adheres to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy; takes a solution‑oriented approach and promotes collaboration.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assist the teacher(s) in preparing materials, teaching aids, bulletin boards, and equipment for direct instructional activity.
- Schedule space for specialized programs; coordinate the arrangement of seating and activity areas.
- Examine short‑and long‑term unit plans and anticipate supply needs.
- Assist the teacher in adapting curriculum to meet student needs; confer on student progress.
- Serve as substitute teacher when necessary.
- Provide student supervision before, during, and after school; assist in maintaining security of records, materials, and equipment.
- Maintain a clean, orderly environment; check objective tests and mark errors (but not assign a grade).
- Escort or transport students to and from classrooms, clinic, cafeteria as required.
- Provide instructional assistance as planned or coordinated by the teacher or administrator.
- Lead small‑group activity following appropriate training.
- Assist students with personal hygiene, health and safety issues, or grooming if required.
- Work closely with teachers, parents, administrators, and other professionals; exhibit interpersonal skills and service orientation.
- Demonstrate initiative on assigned responsibilities; follow attendance, punctuality, and other work‑ethic standards.
- Model and maintain high ethical standards.
- Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
- Prepare reports and maintain appropriate records.
- Identify potential problems or opportunities for improvement; participate in cross‑training activities.
- Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education, or an associate’s or higher degree.
- Knowledge of school procedures and policies; ability to adapt to different situations.
- Experience working with children in day camps, youth groups, private schools, or licensed day‑care centers.
- Demonstrated ability to assist in instruction in core subjects.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and vehicle insurance.
- Must pass archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.
- Knowledge of techniques and procedures for working with a targeted student population.
- Ability to relate and communicate effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to plan and/or implement instructional activities.
- Technical competency with a variety of technology and equipment.
- Clerical skills; ability to cooperate as a team member.
- Physical ability to lift a student if required.
- Detail oriented, organized, self‑motivated; works well independently and on a team.
- Critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills.
