Position: Learning Experience Designer - STEM

Learning Experience Designer Job Summary

The Learning Experience Designer works collaboratively with faculty and staff to drive, design and produce flexible, creative, innovative and high‑quality learning experiences for all students in all modalities. The position guides course development by promoting and implementing a student‑centric, holistic approach informed by evidence‑based teaching and learning best practices, and supports innovative online and technology‑enhanced educational experiences, including course design, learning management systems, and digital pedagogies for distance education.

Up to $71,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Core Responsibilities
  • Employ a student‑centric, holistic approach to improving the digital learning experience and promote effective and authentic learning.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to design and develop engaging digital learning activities and compelling learning experiences that enhance retention and knowledge transfer for students.
  • Identify target personas, develop learning experience wireframes, design storyboards and prototypes, and define content development plans and frameworks aligned with best practices in pedagogical innovation and user experience design.
  • Design and develop interactive elements for prototyping, testing, and supporting new learning strategies/models.
  • Design and develop online courses using contemporary development tools and adhere to style guides and quality standards for unified and consistent learning experiences.
  • Ensure learning design and content development are completed on time and meet standards of quality and good practices in learning experience design.
  • Analyze learning metrics to assess effectiveness of learning solutions and make changes to meet emerging needs of learners.
  • Create and support the maintenance of internal style and design documentation for new learning models.
  • Offer technical, creative, and logistical recommendations to team members and other stakeholders on design and production of learning content.
  • Facilitate faculty professional development opportunities on design, building, and teaching online and hybrid courses.
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning principles and accessibility standards to learning experience design.
  • Support direct training, learning experiences and activities related to implementation of new LMS.
  • Participate in university‑wide task forces.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in instructional design, instructional technology or related field.
  • One (1) year of experience working in the field of education and applying UDL principles.
  • Ability to maintain the security and integrity of the university and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in a related field.
  • STEM‑focused degree or educational background.
  • Two or more years designing and facilitating STEM courses in higher education.
  • Three to five years of experience working in an online, higher education environment as an instructional designer or a similar role.
  • Experience with pedagogy and STEM‑focused curriculum design for online adult education, including a deep understanding of best practices related to adult/cognitive learning theory, assessment design, interactivity, and measuring the efficacy of learning outcomes.
  • Familiarity with ADA, W3C and 508 compliances for digital accessibility.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Learning Management and Content Management Systems.
  • Pedagogy in Higher Education.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.
Working Conditions
  • Remote one day per week, subject to department scheduling policy and approval.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Occasional travel to state and national conventions and workshops.
  • May be required to travel between campuses.
  • General instruction from direct supervisor.
  • Determines own work sequence within limits of established policies and procedures.
  • May supervise students and/or assigned support staff.
  • Accuracy and proficiency in all phases of assigned duties.
Physical Demands
  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time.
  • Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
