Position Title
Peer Tutor (Academic Year )
Position SummaryThe Peer Tutor provides academic tutoring and/or writing assistance to undergraduate UIW students individually and in groups, as qualified, and performs other center‑related duties when not tutoring. Peer Tutors are assigned to specific disciplines based on qualifications and report to the Director, Learning Support Services.
Essential Functions- Work with students individually and in groups to provide academic support.
- Offer workshops, exam reviews, and embedded tutoring based on experience.
- Assist with center‑related tasks such as outreach, record‑keeping, and resource creation when not tutoring students.
- Communicate regularly with supervisor.
- Writing‑course tutors must demonstrate outstanding performance in at least one writing‑intensive college‑level course with an emphasis on research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain concepts.
- Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills, including patience and empathy toward students.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, with outstanding performance in courses applying to tutor.
- Basic knowledge of standard office equipment and computer software.
- Adherence to office standards, including confidentiality and responsible, ethical conduct.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Adherence to all applicable University, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Current undergraduate or graduate student at UIW.
Required Work ExperienceNone; training is provided.
Preferred QualificationsExperience assisting others with academic work, such as helping a classmate or sibling.
Required Certifications, Licenses or RegistrationsNone.
Work Hours5–20 hours per week, depending on tutor availability and demand for subjects tutored.
