Professional Mathematics Tutor (Part‑Time)
Provide one‑on‑one and small group tutoring in person to current Texas A&M University‑San Antonio students enrolled in mathematics courses. The tutor meets with professors to verify course content and requirements, and promotes student engagement with tutoring services. Information sessions about tutoring may also be conducted. The position is part‑time; the maximum number of hours per week is nineteen.
Salary: $17.50 per hour.
Responsibilities- Meet with students individually or in group sessions through scheduled or nonscheduled appointments.
- Explain, model, and offer academic assistance related to the subject or assignments.
- Provide suggestions for more effective studying or preparation of assignments for the course.
- Assist with the planning, implementation, and presentation of workshops offered through the Academic Learning Center.
- Follow up with tutees as required in a timely manner.
- Communicate with the Assistant Director of the Academic Learning Center regarding issues, concerns, and suggestions.
- Attend training sessions and meetings.
- Arrive for appointments and scheduled hours on time and as scheduled.
- Notify the Academic Learning Center leadership ahead of time or as soon as possible if an absence occurs.
- Maintain confidentiality of all involved in the tutoring experience.
- Perform and maintain focused tutoring responsibilities in an active, highly productive workplace environment that meets the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
- Other duties as necessary for effective tutoring.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or higher in a related field.
- No prior experience required.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Comprehensive understanding of mathematics topics commonly supported, including College Algebra, Math for Business/Social Science, Pre‑calculus, Calculus I & II, Differential equations, Linear algebra, and Introductory Statistics.
- Preferred ability to tutor statistics‑related coursework such as Psychology Research & Statistics, Business Statistics, and Statistics for Criminology.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Ability to work individually or in groups to complete projects.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations to students and faculty.
- Ability to build trusting relationships by acting with integrity, courtesy, and responsibility, even in stressful or demanding workplace conditions.
- Ability to display empathy and positive regard for others in written, verbal, and non‑verbal communications.
- Ability to work with colleagues and students by practicing punctuality, respect for deadlines, collaborative problem solving, and honest communication.
- Ability to be friendly and collegial with co‑workers, faculty, students, staff, and visitors to the campus.
- Strong interpersonal, relationship‑building, and conflict‑resolution skills.
