Assistant Director of Law Student Affairs and Accessibility
St. Mary's University School of Law is seeking an Assistant Director of Law Student Affairs and Accessibility. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Law Student Affairs and working directly with the University's Student Accessibility Services, this position manages operations related to law student accommodations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as primary School of Law contact for law student accommodations and Title IX adjustments.
- Works directly with Student Accessibility Services to ensure alignment with University policies, procedures, and practices related to the implementation of student accommodations and adjustments.
- Consults and communicates with students, staff, and faculty regarding rights and responsibilities of students with disabilities, characteristics of specific disabilities in an educational setting, and self-advocacy skills.
- Designs and conducts ADA/disability educational workshops, in conjunction with the Office of Student Accessibility Services, to increase the academic and personal support to students with disabilities; promotes understanding, develops awareness, and educates faculty, staff, and students regarding campus accessibility.
- Maintains confidential records and tracks student accommodations.
- Maintains detailed and timely documentation regarding any and all communication with students seeking and receiving support.
- Maintains records and statistics concerning students declaring a disability in accordance with established university policy.
- Coordinates logistics for all School of Law accommodated exams in consultation with Director of Student Records including exam accommodations for accessibility and emergency; reserve classrooms, serve as scribe reading assistance, or proctor, transport of materials across campus, rearranging of light furniture (moving desk/chairs), cross-checking that the correct exams, and all communication and documentation.
- Compiles, analyzes, and prepares data for monthly, annual and other reports as necessary.
- Implements and manages programs, activities, services, assistive technology, and accommodations, in consultation with Student Accessibility Services.
- Trains support staff providing exam assistance.
- Assists with evaluating current processes and resources to identify current, short-term and long-term needs related to trends in disability support services, accommodated testing and testing programs for law students.
- Adheres to professional and ethical guidelines, including relevant legislation related to access and security of confidential patient health records (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, and ADA legislation/guidelines).
- Provides operational support assistance during School of Law campus-wide projects and initiatives.
- Serves on assigned committees, boards or commissions and may be assigned to perform as part of an investigative team.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required;
Master's or Juris Doctor degree preferred - At least one year of student advising experience, or similar experience providing student support in a higher education setting required
- Experience in college/university disability services or student affairs and/or in advising law, graduate, or professional students is preferred.
- Must have knowledge and/or experience with handling the implementation of ADA accommodations
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university
- Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate proficiency in MS Office/MS 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Teams, Zoom, or similar online/virtual meeting platforms; proficient in graphic design software (Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, etc.)
