Position: Teacher's Aide (Part Time)

Under immediate supervision, the Assistant Teacher supports the classroom teacher in preparing and maintaining a safe and engaging learning environment for four‑year‑old children in the City’s Pre‑K 4 SA program at Education Centers. Responsibilities include coordinating student loading and unloading on the school bus and ensuring student safety at transportation sites.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the teacher with classroom preparation and the daily growth and development of four‑year‑old students.
  • Assist in preparing and organizing needed materials and supplies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized learning environment.
  • Actively engage with children, partnering in play to support and extend learning.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining discipline and supervising students, using guidance strategies appropriate for young children.
  • Plan, develop, and maintain safe and engaging outdoor learning environments.
  • Monitor and maintain order at transportation sites, classroom, motor skills room, playground, cafeteria, hallways, and other areas.
  • Communicate with parents and build relationships with students to create a positive, safe, and welcoming school culture.
  • Load and unload students on the bus, ensuring safety, discipline, and supervision, and assist with fastening safety restraints.
  • Supervise students as they cross the street with an authorized individual or accompany them when no authorized individual is present.
  • Monitor and maintain student discipline, reporting violations to appropriate personnel.
  • Walk and check the interior of the bus, including under each seat, at the end of each bus route.
  • Document and report all incidents, illnesses, or injuries that occur during bus rides to the driver and supervisor.
  • Operate equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Visual acuity, speech, hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate equipment.
  • Continuous walking, standing, sitting, reaching, bending, and crouching while performing essential functions.
  • Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments with routine exposure to temperature variations and vehicle fumes.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
  • Child Development Associate Certification (CDA) or the ability to obtain it within six (6) months of employment.
  • OR twelve (12) hours of college credit in Education or Childhood Development from an accredited college or university.
Skills
  • Knowledge of basic bus safety rules.
  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood education principles.
  • Knowledge of safe and appropriate activities for students.
  • Knowledge of early childhood guidance strategies.
  • Skill in operating equipment used in transporting special needs students.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing associated software.
  • Skill in using classroom and instructional equipment.
  • Skill in organizing, planning, and prioritizing work.
  • Skill in resolving conflicts and negotiating with others.
  • Ability to learn assigned bus routes.
  • Ability to adhere to safety practices.
  • Ability to work with and assist students, including those with special needs.
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and choose the best solution to solve problems.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position.
