Job Title: Mariachi Teacher

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Principal

Pay Grade: Teacher scale

Primary

Purpose:

Direct, manage and implement a comprehensive Mariachi program. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular Mariachi activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification:
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • Valid Texas teaching certificate – Music EC-12
    • Demonstrated competency in core subject area assigned
    • College hours in Mariachi methods or professional Mariachi experience
    • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:
    • Knowledge and skills in teaching methods and strategies in voice and mariachi instruments, including violin, trumpet, vihuela, guitar and guitarron
    • Knowledge and skills in teaching Mariachi styles
    • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
    • Knowledge of music technology and skill in appropriate software for musical event and contest registration
    • Demonstrated evidence of responsibility, competence, enthusiasm, and imagination
    • Demonstrated ability to foster cooperation and establish a professional relationship with other staff members
    • Demonstrated success in promoting positive public relations within the community
    • Demonstrated success in recruiting and retaining students in the program
    • Demonstrated success in motivating students to excel
  • Experience:

    Three years teaching and Mariachi experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Instructional Strategies
    • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill district curriculum program requirements and provide written evidence of preparation as required. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
    • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of learning styles and needs of students and present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
    • Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
    • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
    • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
    • Plan and prepare students for successful participation in UIL and solo & ensemble contests as well as performances within the school and community.
    • Assist with planning and implementation of the whole school music program.
    • Communicate expectations and program goals to students, faculty, parents, community, and booster club members.
    • Plan, promote and maintain a professional and positive working relationship with feeder secondary school administration and staff.
    • Actively coordinate the efforts of the Mariachi booster organization.
    • Maintain accurate Mariachi equipment and uniform inventory.
    • Implement planned maintenance and cleaning schedule of equipment and uniforms.
    • Maintain the Mariachi music library.
    • Attend all UIL/TMEA Region meetings, clinics, and concerts.
    • Actively participate in professional organizations which foster and support music education.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.
  • Student Management
    • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
    • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
    • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
