Position Summary

The Peer Coach helps and guides students in the NSF LSAMP Scholar program via one‑on‑one meetings, authentic, personal connections, and group meetings with Scholars and other coaches. Peer coaches also assist in the annual Fall La Familia event, as well as with other events put on by the NSF LSAMP Alliance group. Peer Coach will report to the Peer Coach Coordinator.

Due to grant restrictions, this postion is not applicable for Nutrition majors.

Essential Functions

The LSAMP Peer Coaches should be junior or senior in standing and also be pursuing a major in the School of Math Science and Engineering, with the exception of Nutrition. Peer Coaches will have the following…

Expectations
  • Attend end of Semester LSAMP Scholar Celebration
  • Attend fall Training
  • Attend weekly Staff Meetings
  • Attend fall Orientation – La Familia
Responsibilities
  • Meets with assigned LSAMP scholars regularly.
  • Creates/maintains a schedule for peer‑to‑peer meetings.
  • Maintains accurate and timely notes of peer‑to‑peer meetings.
  • Attends and assists with facilitation and implementation of La Familia Orientation, various LSAMP events, and weekly staff meetings.
  • Attends and participates in any/all training sessions as assigned.
  • Hosts workshops, group events.
  • Holds office hours for assigned scholars.
  • Develops understanding and knowledge of college services, support, and resources.
  • Serve as a role model and resource for all LSAMP scholars.
  • Make appropriate LSAMP scholar referrals to college offices, departments or professionals, as needed.
  • Meet regularly with Peer Coach Coordinator, and Program Director.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to meet all listed time commitments.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Zoom or similar platforms).
  • Familiarity with CANVAS learning modules.
  • Ability to use statistical programs, and willing to learn and use additional programs.
  • Ability to maintain all confidential materials and student information.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills are necessary in person, writing and by phone.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and use problem solving techniques.
  • Skills in short- and long‑term planning, while also demonstrating flexibility.
  • Strong organizational skills, critical thinking and attention to details.
  • Professional demeanor, appearance and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, meet timelines, organize information, and the ability to multi‑task in a fast‑paced office.
  • Strong desire to develop high‑quality, personal relationships with other STEM scholars.
Required Education
  • Must be currently enrolled as a full time, undergraduate, Junior/Senior level STEM major, and be in good academic and conduct standing.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better.

Work Hours
  • 10 hours per week minimum for 15wk in the Fall
  • 10 hours per week minimum for 16wk in the Spring.
  • There will also be required attendance to four additional events – dates TBD.
Physical Demands

While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.
