Position: Education Counselor, IMCOM Army Continuing Education Services (ACES)

Responsibilities

Provides educational counseling including academic advising including Army Personnel Testing (APT), DANTES testing through the Mil Gears program, and Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST/BSEP) on Army military installations. The Education Counselor is responsible for constantly improving educational standards, ensuring compliance, and providing professional educational counseling within the program. The Education Counselor must have professional knowledge of AR 621-5 (Army Continuing Education System) and related implementing memoranda.

The Educational Counselor must also have knowledge and experience with the Post 9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, Army Tuition Assistance, the Army Credentialing Assistance program, which covers over 1,900 credentials, the Educational Development Plan (EDP) process, and Functional Academic Skills Training programs that prepare soldiers for testing and basic skills education. The Education Counselor will collaborate with stakeholders, including program managers, counselors, and training staff, to maintain counselor quality, ensure proper training and certification, and uphold the overall integrity of the educational guidance provided to soldiers.

Requirements
  • A minimum of one (1) year of adult education counseling experience.
  • Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any area of study from a college or university that is accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education that is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours appropriate to the position to be filled. At least one course must have been from (1) or (2) below.
    • Tests and measurement:
      Study of the selection, evaluation, administration, scoring, interpretation, and uses of group and individual aptitude, proficiency, interest, and other tests.
    • Adult education:
      Study of the adult as a learner, teaching‑learning theories for adults, models and procedures for planning, designing, managing, and evaluating adult learning activities.
    • Educational program administration:
      Study of the foundation and methods in organizing for adult and continuing education programs.
    • Curriculum development or design:
      Study of the principles and techniques for development of curricula for adult or vocational education programs.
    • Teaching methods:
      Study of teaching strategies and learning styles of the adult learner.
    • Guidance and counseling:
      Study of the purposes and methods in counseling and guidance, the role of the counselor in various settings, approaches to counseling, and the uses of tests in the counseling situation.
    • Career planning:
      Study of career development, learning activities, systems, approaches, program coordination, use of educational and community resources, and vocational counseling systems.
    • Occupational information:
      Study of theories of occupational choice and vocational development and their application to the guidance process. Identification and utilization of various types of occupational information and resources.
  • Proficiency of the U.S. Department of Education postsecondary education system.
  • Have experience in soldier development programs, career guidance and planning techniques.

  • Must also possess a working knowledge of computer operations and be able to successfully use online education systems such as  and provide interpretation of personal and skill qualification instruments.
