Job Summary

St. Pius X Catholic School is currently seeking a Child Development Center substitute teacher. All child development center substitutes must meet Texas state guidelines for childcare workers. St. Pius X maintains a long-standing tradition of love, education, moral development, and spirituality.

A substitute teacher is responsible for enabling each child to pursue his or her education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of the regular teacher. The substitute carries out the lesson plans of the regular teacher and meets the teaching duties outlined in the policies of the school and Archdiocese of San Antonio.

FLSA Status: Hourly/Temporary

Position Responsibilities
  • Supports and upholds the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission of the school
  • Acts as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Supports and adheres to the Religious Standards for Catholic School Employees and policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters
  • Provide instructional reinforcement for individual students or small groups of students
  • Supervise students in the cafeteria, schoolyard, specials, hallways, on field trips, and/or during before and after school programs
  • Attend to students' physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs
  • Perform other duties as directed by the classroom teacher and school administration
  • Use approved, corrective, and positive discipline procedures in dealing with inappropriate student conduct
  • Collaborate with school personnel to enhance the work environment and support academic programming
  • Adhere to safety training and protocols on a daily basis and take precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of self and others
  • Protect the confidentiality of any information or material obtained in the service with the organization, including client names, services rendered, donor names and gifts, internal and external investigations, and financial information
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct and the Faith and Moral Policy
  • Approach interactions with a solution-oriented mindset, promoting collaboration and commitment to the Mission and Vision of the organization
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 1 year of substituting or teaching experience preferred
  • Reliable transportation
  • Valid vehicle insurance

Minimum Knowledge and

Skills:

  • Attend to students' physical, personal, academic, and emotional needs
  • Provide instructional reinforcement for individual students or small groups of students
  • General supervision of the class
  • Detail oriented, organized, self‑motivated, and able to work well independently and on a team
  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Good critical thinking and problem‑solving skills

Must pass Archdiocesan Safe Environment Requirements and background screening.

Must pass Texas DPS Fingerprint‑based Applicant Clearinghouse screening.

All child development center substitutes must meet Texas state guidelines for childcare workers.

Qualified substitutions are expected to have a clear understanding of classroom instructional expectations and maintain high standards of student engagement and safety.
