Substitute Teachers at TMI fulfill a wide range of classroom supervision, administration and academic duties. Throughout a single school day, Substitutes may cover for multiple teachers in multiple different classrooms at multiple different grade levels (6-12) as needed. While subject matter specific academic skills are not required to cover a class, Substitutes are expected to have a college education, a high level of academic experience, and a general ability to guide, assist, and advise students in their studies.
The position requires working closely with students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative teamwork environment. Successful candidates will have prior teaching experience or working with children (preferably grades 6-12), excellent communication skills, a high level of attention to detail, and a high degree of patience.
- Supervise, instruct, and assist students while performing related job duties of the regular classroom teacher in their absence.
- Monitor classroom attendance and maintain a disciplined, yet positive classroom environment.
- Adhere to all regular classroom teacher’s lesson plans, policies, and procedures provided.
- Serve as a positive role model to students.
- Oversee and ensure classroom safety of assigned students; provide leadership and direction to students during any emergency or drill.
- Maintain open and friendly lines of communication with students, faculty & staff.
- Know the principles of child development, accepted teaching techniques, education programs, and the rules and regulations of TMI Episcopal School.
- Report all infractions or violations of school rules and regulations to the Attendance Officer and appropriate school leadership as necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required.
- Experience teaching or working with children at the middle and/or upper school levels is strongly preferred.
- Excellent oral & written communication skills; ability to maintain professionalism, tact, patience, and courtesy while effectively interacting with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality while demonstrating broad understanding, tolerance, and acceptance.
- Able to control emotions & maintain composure in stressful situations.
- Dependable & reliable; ability to show up to work on time on assigned/ agreed day of duty.
- Comfortable using technology (computers, phones, apps, etc.).
- Standard classroom atmosphere located inside multiple, separated buildings.
- Will be exposed to outdoor elements while changing classrooms & supporting daily school events and activities.
- Frequent sitting, standing, and walking may be required for long periods of time, and may involve climbing stairs and walking up inclines.
- TMI is a diverse community and requires all members to maintain a high degree of professional behavior in all dealings with students, colleagues, and parents, regardless of personal beliefs or background.
- Generally, substitute teachers hired and employed by TMI on an “as needed” and “on call” basis and may or may not be asked to work every day depending on the need.
- Must complete “Safeguarding God’s Children” Training (upon initial acceptance/job offer).
- Must pass a criminal & sex offender background investigation.
