Program Assistant

The Buda Public Library is looking for a welcoming and energetic program assistant to join our team! This person will plan and present story times and classes to children of all ages. They will also assist with adult programming, including providing Makers' Lab services. The ideal candidate will have experience working with children and is comfortable teaching themselves new skills. Under general supervision, the Programming Assistant develops, coordinates, promotes, and delivers engaging library programs and outreach services that encourage literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement for patrons of all ages.

This position assists with planning and evaluating programming, provides excellent customer service, supports daily library operations, and helps create a welcoming and inclusive environment for library patrons.

Examples of Duties
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate educational, recreational, and literacy-based programs for children, teens, adults, and families to promote library services and increase community participation.
  • Research community interests and assess programming needs to develop relevant and engaging programs that support the Library's strategic goals.
  • Coordinate program logistics, including scheduling meeting spaces, presenters, volunteers, supplies, and equipment to ensure successful program delivery.
  • Maintain records and compile statistical information related to program attendance, participation, and outcomes to evaluate program effectiveness and support reporting requirements.
  • Develop promotional materials, social media content, displays, and other communications to increase awareness of library programs and services.
  • Represent the Library through outreach activities with schools, community organizations, civic groups, and local partners to strengthen community relationships and expand access to library resources.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service by assisting patrons in person, by telephone, email, and other communication methods with library accounts, materials, services, and general information.
  • Perform circulation functions to include checking materials in and out, renewing materials, processing library card applications, collecting applicable fees, contacting patrons regarding library business, maintaining circulation records, and resolving routine account issues to ensure efficient library operations.
  • Assist patrons with computers, printers, self-service equipment, online resources, and other library technology to improve access to information and services.
  • Shelve, organize, and maintain library materials to ensure collections remain accessible and accurately organized.
  • Assist in maintaining an attractive, clean, safe, and welcoming library environment for patrons and staff
  • Assist with training and mentoring staff and volunteers on library procedures, customer service practices, and programming activities to promote consistent service delivery.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training opportunities, and professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of library trends and best practices.
  • Assist the Library Director and other staff with special projects, events, and operational needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED required. Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in library services, education, recreation, customer service, community programming, event coordination, or a closely related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and qualifying experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

Additional Information:
The ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish is valued and may enhance the ability to serve the City's diverse community but is not required for this position. Employees who meet the qualifications established by City policy may be eligible for bilingual incentive pay.

Public library principles, practices, services, and operations. Library programming methods and age-appropriate educational, recreational, and literacy activities for patrons of varying ages. Customer service principles and techniques. Community outreach and engagement practices. Integrated library systems (ILS), circulation procedures, and library technologies. Standard office practices, recordkeeping procedures, and basic statistical reporting methods. Computer applications, including Microsoft Office and common web-based software.

Social media platforms, marketing strategies, and promotional techniques used to increase program awareness and participation. Basic safety practices applicable to public facilities and programs.
