Job Description

Job Title: Instructional Aide Sped
- Inclusion

Reports to: Principal and Teacher(s)

Dept./School: Assigned Campus

Exemption Status/Test: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: IS3

Primary

Purpose:

Assist teacher with the delivery of instructional and special education services to special needs students and provide additional student support as needed.

Qualifications
  • Education/Certification: Associate degree or higher; or
  • Minimum of forty eight (48) semester college hours from an accredited college or university;
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency) and passed the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) test; and
  • Be eligible to obtain a paraprofessional certificate issued by the State Board of Educator Certification
  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

    Ability to work with students with severe learning, physical and/or emotional disabilities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to provide assistance to students according to ARD/IEPs
  • Knowledge of types of special education disability areas and the specific needs associated with these areas.
  • Ability to restrain and physically support and/or assist team members with the students’ physical support of students of up to 100 pounds in weight.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Experience: One year experience working with special needs children.

Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Support
  • Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  • Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
Student Management
  • Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  • Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside classroom. This includes lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Serve as a positive role model for children and support the mission of SSAISD.
Other
  • Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  • Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students

Posture: Frequent walking, standing; kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking and reaching

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds);
Occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning or students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non ambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive and other classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases). May required toileting, feeding, and lifting Special Needs students. May required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraints of students in danger or causing harm to themselves or others.

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
