Position Summary

TX-STAR is seeking certified educators to provide substitute teaching services for public, charter, and private schools throughout San Antonio and the surrounding areas.

Certified Substitute Teachers provide classroom instruction and supervision when the regularly assigned teacher is unavailable. Assignments may include single-day, multi-day, and long-term opportunities. Substitute Teachers may select assignments based on their availability, preferred grade levels, subject areas, and geographic preferences.

This opportunity is well suited for retired teachers, former educators, and certified teachers seeking flexible school-based work while continuing to make a positive impact on students.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Follow lesson plans, instructional materials, and directions provided by the classroom teacher or school administration.
  • Deliver instruction that supports the established curriculum and learning objectives.
  • Maintain a safe, respectful, organized, and productive classroom environment.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with campus and district policies.
  • Take attendance and complete all required classroom documentation.
  • Provide individual and small-group support when appropriate.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other assigned periods.
  • Use classroom technology and instructional resources as directed.
  • Accommodate students’ documented learning needs in accordance with instructions provided by the school.
  • Communicate relevant information about the school day to the regularly assigned teacher or designated administrator.
  • Report student injuries, behavioral concerns, safety issues, or other significant incidents promptly.
  • Protect confidential student and school information.
  • Follow all TX-STAR, campus, district, state, and federal policies and procedures.
  • Represent TX-STAR professionally when interacting with students, families, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel.
  • Perform other reasonable duties associated with the assignment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Hold a current and valid Texas teaching certificate issued by the State Board for Educator Certification.
  • Maintain educator certification in good standing and be eligible to work in a Texas public-school setting.
  • Successfully complete all required fingerprinting, criminal-history reviews, and employment background checks.
  • Meet the onboarding, orientation, training, and documentation requirements established by TX-STAR and the assigned school or district.
  • Provide professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow lesson plans, deliver classroom instruction, manage student behavior, and maintain a safe learning environment.
  • Possess basic computer skills and the ability to use common classroom technology.
  • Have reliable transportation and the ability to report to assigned campuses on time.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, flexibility, sound judgment, and respect for student confidentiality.

The Substitute Teacher’s certification area and grade level must satisfy the participating school or district’s requirements when applicable to a specific assignment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous classroom teaching or substitute teaching experience.
  • Experience working with multiple grade levels or subject areas.
  • Experience completing long-term substitute assignments.
  • Certification or experience in a high-need area, including special education, bilingual education, English as a Second Language, mathematics, or science.
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities or diverse learning needs.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
  • Availability to accept multiple assignments each week.
