The San Antonio District is looking for a Transportation Specialist I, II, or III to join the District’s Central Design Section. This role provides exposure to the full PS&E process, open design workflows in Open Roads Designer (ORD) and Micro Station CONNECT, and opportunities to automate repetitive tasks with VBA within ORD. The position supports Digital Delivery initiatives through 3D roadway modeling and contributes to shaping the future of project delivery.
The team focuses on innovation and applying the latest software capabilities to PS&E production, with construction insight gained by supporting Area Offices with design guidance, Change Orders, and RFIs. This role helps deliver high‑quality projects efficiently to meet district and state needs.

- Transportation Specialist I (B19) - $48,244 - $76,028
- Transportation Specialist II (B20) - $51,158 - $81,351
- Transportation Specialist III (B21) - $54,278 - $87,046
Salary and Employment Details
- This position is for multiple Transportation Specialist I, II, or III. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Responsibilities and ScopeProvides technical expertise and coordination for transportation programs involving multiple design and advanced building construction projects, highway and facility maintenance, traffic operations, or bridge inspection and appraisal in accordance with Department standards. Supports project planning, oversight, and policy development within the area of responsibility. Works with governmental officials, consultants, contractors, and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet objectives.
TransportationSpecialist I
- Assists with project design involving calculations and sketches of plans, layouts and typical sections
- Develops site layouts using engineering workstations and software
- Coordinates design work among TxDOT entities, consultants, and contractors
- Inspects roadways and evaluates road conditions
- Evaluates and analyzes design issues
- May serve as a lead worker and perform related tasks
- Reviews Plans, Specifications & Estimates and project designs for traffic control devices, signals, signs, markings, detours, traffic control plans, roadway illumination, traffic management systems or ITS
- Trains staff on new operations and performs other related responsibilities as assigned
- Assists with project assignments and determines work requirements to complete project plans
- Coordinates compilation of complete plan packages for submission to the responsible engineer or architect for review and signature
- Reviews area office contract submissions and coordinates process with area engineers
- Oversees project design, evaluates complex design issues
- Researches data, interprets results, prepares reports, and recommends solutions
- Serves as a technical member on transportation projects
- Writes, reviews, and revises documents including engineering notes, specifications, standards, and procedures
