Overview

Senior / Principal Electrical Transmission Line Engineer (PE), (Hybrid – Team Lead Track). Halff has an opening for a Senior/Principal Electrical Transmission Line Engineer. This is a hands-on transmission leadership position to expand our electric power infrastructure team within our Energy Practice. The ideal candidate will bring experience working with electric power delivery entities (investor-owned utilities, municipally owned utilities and/or electric cooperatives, privately-owned electric power systems) or engineering consultants in Electric Power Infrastructure (EPI).

Candidates should have experience managing and growing a transmission design team, coordinating with clients, and leading delivery of capital asset projects. This role will lead through hands-on technical delivery and quality oversight while building the team and establishing standards; formal leadership responsibilities will grow as the team expands. EPI Transmission Services are a primary focus, experience with substation interconnects is a plus.

You will work a hybrid schedule after initial ramp up. Travel up to 25% based on project needs and office location. Offices available in Houston (preferred), Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, or San Antonio.

What You Will Do

  • Serve as technical authority for transmission-related engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Establish and manage the transmission team operating rhythm, including workload forecasting, standards governance, QA/QC expectations, and technical development.
  • Provide quality accountability through structured QA/QC participation and independent technical review of key deliverables.
  • Prepare designs, construction packages, and bills of material for complex transmission line projects and provide engineering support to the full project life cycle.
  • Interpret geotechnical reports/boring logs and design a variety of foundation types (e.g., direct-embed, pier, spread, pile) using one or more of CAISSON, LPILE, or MFAD.
  • Direct, mentor, and/or train one or more Project Engineers, EITs, Designers, CADD Technicians and administrative staff.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement transmission design standards, philosophies, tools, and procedures to improve consistency and execution quality.
  • Create and execute strategic plans and guide the growth of electric transmission infrastructure related design services.
  • Lead successful strategic pursuits to capture specific opportunities, including acting as Project Manager on significant projects.
  • Manage and lead a production team, coordinate with clients and lead delivery of multiple electric power infrastructure design projects for private and public clients.
  • Work closely with the operations team and Energy Practice Leadership to develop, create, and execute growth strategies for the team.
  • Work closely with operations staff to identify, hire, develop and grow key staff and resources, and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Develop technical specifications and bid documents and assist clients with the bid and evaluation process.
  • Work closely with other practices to leverage firm-wide resources.
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in civil engineering or ABET-accredited equivalent engineering degree (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical preferred).
  • An active Texas Professional Engineer (PE) License, in good standing, in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering. (NCEES record is a plus).
  • A minimum of 10+ years of combined experience as an engineer and project manager at an investor-owned utility, municipally owned utility, electric cooperative, and/or privately owned electric power system; or within an A/E or design/construction firm, or within a dedicated design group or an electric utility, petrochemical, refining, mining, or other related industry firm that designs electric power infrastructure.
