Police Dispatcher UIW Mission Position Summary

The Police Dispatcher is responsible for receiving, assessing and documenting emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatching UIW police and security officers with the respective pertinent information as appropriate to any campus or university location upon request. The Police Dispatcher reports to the University Police Lieutenant.

Note that this position requires the ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment, as required by TCOLE standards.

Job duties for the Police Dispatcher include assessment, documentation, and dispatch of calls to appropriate personnel while maintaining professional composure during high-stress situations. These duties also involve ensuring the safety and welfare of UIW students, employees, visitors and property, and adhering to attendance standards in a 24‑hour operations center.

• Effective oral communication skills via phone and radio systems; clear, concise speaking voice and the ability to type 25 words per minute.
• Ability to effectively prioritize incoming calls and relay necessary information to appropriate individuals in a timely manner.
• Ability to maintain professional composure during high‑stress situations and obtain detailed information to disseminate appropriately.
• Must exercise good judgment in providing for the safety and welfare of UIW students, employees, visitors and property.
• Must abide by attendance standards as this is a critical 24‑hour operations center.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
• Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Six (6) months of experience in a position that required public contact, dispatching or related duties.

• Some college education.
• One year of job‑related experience, including experience with radio communications and computers.

• Must have a valid driver’s license or state , as required by TCOLE licensure.
• Ability to successfully pass a physical and psychological evaluation as a condition of employment, as required by TCOLE standards.
• Willingness and ability to secure a Telecommunicator License by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (which requires U.S. citizenship) within one year from the date of assignment.

Rotating shifts required, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and special events, as operational needs dictate. Current shifts include: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

• Long hours of working in isolation.
• Must have good hearing to be attentive and secure accurate information and relay as appropriate.
• Good hand dexterity to be able to use phones, police radio systems, and internal radio systems for communication.
