Summary
ADVANCED CHENEGA SERVICES, LLC – Lackland AFB, TX. The Veterinarian will apply professional knowledge of veterinary science in the care and medical examinations of Military Working Dogs (MWDs). Responsibilities include physical exams; interpretation of radiographic images, blood, urine, and fecal tests; assessment of hip stability, oral health, and normal dental condition; and development and tracking of medical therapies. The role also involves diagnosing problems, interpreting diagnostic imaging studies, and conducting semi‑annual, sick call, and pre‑departure physical exams of military working dogs to ensure fitness for duty and deployment.
Responsibilities- Performs physical examinations of canines and pre‑purchase medical examinations of MWDs.
- Interprets radiographic images of hips, elbows, and lumbosacral vertebrae; assesses hip stability; and evaluates oral health, dental condition, blood, urine, and fecal tests.
- Recommends purchase or rejection of candidates.
- Conducts semi‑annual, sick call, and pre‑departure physical exams; diagnoses problems and interprets diagnostic imaging studies and other special tests based on appropriate education and training.
- Supervises the collection and submission of diagnostic specimens and performs laboratory specimen evaluation and interpretation.
- Assess fitness for duty and medical readiness for deployment.
- Develops and tracks medical therapies; provides therapeutic medical directives (initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens).
- Directs and supervises administration of vaccinations and medications; manages infectious disease control and surveillance.
- Performs routine diagnostic imaging, including basic digital radiography and limited ultrasonography.
- Pre‑medicates, induces, and maintains anesthesia; assures monitoring and aftercare for recovering patients.
- Performs routine surgical and dental procedures: endodontic (root canal) treatments, preventive and therapeutic periodontal procedures, tooth extraction, dental cleaning, caudectomy, gastropexy, and laceration repair as indicated.
- Processes MWD candidates through examination and application of permanent tattoo identification.
- Provides resuscitative care to animals during emergent situations.
- Maintains functional knowledge of regulatory health requirements for transporting animals worldwide; issues health certifications; performs rabies bite quarantine examinations and releases quarantine suspects.
- Performs non‑routine and advanced clinical procedures conferring with specialists as needed.
- Maintains medical records using Problem‑Oriented Medical Record format in legible handwriting or Remote Operating Veterinary Record electronic medical record entry.
- Directs and supervises military and civilian technicians; provides administrative support (workload reporting, equipment requisitions, medical data gathering).
- Operates office automation equipment, computers, and peripheral equipment to enter treatments, record findings, complete forms, and treatment sheets.
- Exercises judgment in determining personality traits and aggressiveness of animals presented for evaluation and treatment.
- Maintains high level of professional skill, proper records, inventories, and security of controlled drugs.
- Follows patient progress, manages care until discharge from hospital and release from medical hold.
- Ensures compliance with veterinary regulations, AAALAC standards, Animal Welfare Act requirements, US Army Veterinary Medical Standardization Board clinical guidelines, TB MED 298, Handbook of Veterinary Care for the Military Working Dog, and Hospital SOPs.
- Works independently under administrative control of the Supervisory Veterinarian with negligible management guidance; sets work schedules and objectives.
- Directs military and civilian employees; reports unresolved personnel issues to Service Chiefs.
- Complies with regulations and guidelines governing federal and civilian employees.
- Directs military and civilian animal health technicians and veterinary interns, externs, and residents.
