Job Description & How to Apply Below

Location:

Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland, Texas. On site, not remote.

Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 0600 to 1400, 40 hours per week.

Reports to:

CCTV Systems Manager

Compensation: 100-105K annually

About the role

OPTML supports Air Force Basic Military Training at JBSA-Lackland. Part of that is keeping the base's video surveillance enterprise running: hundreds of cameras across two sites, feeding a Milestone XProtect video management system on Dell servers with Net App storage.

Nothing is watched live. The system records on motion and holds footage until someone needs it. That makes this job quietly high-stakes: if a camera silently stops recording, nobody finds out until an investigator asks for footage that no longer exists. Keeping that from happening is the core of the work.

You will be the second person on a two-person team, working directly with and learning from the engineer who knows this system best. Over your first year you will be trained to run it independently. That is the explicit purpose of the position, not a vague growth path.

What the work actually looks like

A given week might include: patching and updating the video management servers, tracking down why a camera dropped off the network, running new cable and mounting a camera from a lift, checking that storage will still hold the required retention as camera count grows, pulling footage for an official request, swapping a failed drive under warranty, and writing down how you did all of it so the next person does not have to figure it out from scratch.

It is half systems administration and half hands-on field work. Some days you are in a cold server room. Other days you are on a lift in San Antonio heat. If you only want one of those two, this is not the job.

What you need
  • Solid Windows Server and Active Directory administration.
  • Networking fundamentals: switches, VLANs, IP addressing, Power over Ethernet.
  • Hands-on cabling experience, running and terminating copper.
  • Comfortable working at height from ladders and lifts, and able to lift 50 pounds.
  • CompTIA Security+, or the ability to earn it shortly after starting.
  • U.S. citizenship, and eligibility for a DoD Secret clearance and base access.
Nice to have, not required

Any video management system experience, especially Milestone XProtect. IP cameras, especially Axis. SQL Server basics. Dell server hardware. SAN or network storage. A+ or Network+. Fiber termination.

You do not need prior experience with this specific system. You will be trained on it.

What we are actually looking for

Someone who learns a complex system deliberately and writes things down as they go. The reason this role exists is so that critical knowledge lives in more than one head. If you are the kind of technician who builds your own documentation because you would rather look it up than remember it, you are exactly who we want.
