We are seeking an exceptional Senior Underwriter with experience working across the underwriting function of a health plan, specifically within the Texas market. This individual should have expertise and proven success in various risk assessment methodologies used in self-funding, level-funding, employer stop-loss, and medical underwriting.
OverviewThe Senior Underwriter will serve as the primary subject matter expert for underwriting configuration at a Texas-based level-funded health plan carrier. This role is responsible for designing, configuring, and implementing underwriting rules, workflows, and logic to enable the carrier to fully support underwriting operations in house. The position partners closely with underwriting leadership, actuarial, sales, and IT to ensure the UW database aligns with business strategy, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements for Texas-based employers.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the configuration and ongoing optimization of underwriting rules, rating logic, and workflows
- Translate underwriting guidelines, risk strategy, and pricing methodologies into rule sets and decision frameworks
- Build and maintain automated underwriting elements, triggers, and decision paths to support level-funded products
- Serve as the primary liaison for platform updates, enhancements, testing, and issue resolution
- Conduct and oversee UAT for new builds, rule changes, and product updates prior to production release
- Partner with underwriting leadership and actuarial teams to implement rating and risk adjustments accurately
- Ensure underwriting configuration complies with Texas regulations and internal governance standards
- 4+ years of health insurance underwriting experience, preferably in level-funded or self-funded products
- Experience in underwriting systems/software
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong understanding of group underwriting methodologies and risk assessment
- Knowledge of Texas health insurance market and regulatory considerations
- Hands-on experience as a Stepwise power user or superuser, including rule configuration and workflow builds
- Microsoft excel wizard! (Index-match, VLOOKUPs, dashboard building in excel, pivot table building/utilization, analyzing loss runs)
